Nes to Atari 2600 cart Adapter?

I know, a bit random, but I was tooling around when I recalled that in my youth, some kid said he made an adapter that allowed him to play NES games on his Atari. Not perfectly mind you, but enough to actually play something. Years later I was talking with some guy at my game store and I brought up that story, and he replied, "Yeah, I did that too. the graphics were horrid and the game was slow, but it worked."

Fast forward about ten years. I can't find anything on the web about it. You'd think that with the amount of hacking and modding on the web today, you'd hear something. Am I the victim of an elaborate con? Did I just challenge you all to a project? Is this fail?

I dont think is would work even with expensive elaborate hardware
I know you dont nessisarily need it to be pin compatable
and i dont think the atari could even show a 1 second bit of a game with out
frying
but thats just my opinion

Your friend was telling you BS, especially the "graphics were horrible and the game was slow" part. THe closest thing that's possible is a video/audio/controls passthrough, which essentially uses the atari only as a portal to send the data to the television, which isn't possible on the atari. It's what Coleco did to let atari games play on an adapter for the Colecovision, except that was reality.

Right, I know that its seemed impossible, especially now with my knowledge of processors and such. But you never know. Plus two completely different people, both whom could never have ever known each other, claim the exact same thing. Bizarre, but I've heard other such inanely stupid things that can happen. I was more morbidly curious to see if anyone else have either heard or done such a thing.

This reminded of when I was really young. The guys at the game store would always claim to know how to do some crazy trick, or know some amazing game secret, but would never tell anyone how. This was before the internet mind you. It's just another form of unverifiable boasting that kids love to do.

An atari 2600 -> NES adapter is possible, but the 2600's resolution is not enough to put a NES display on it, and scaling it down is out of it's capabilities.

Impossible really. The 6502, TIA, and RIOT chip are wired directly to the cart slot and don't have pass through abilities. The 6502 probably couldn't even process half the of data stream necessary if it was remotely possible.

It seems everyone is assuming "Atari" to mean 2600 only,(which is understandable with this being the 'Atari 2600' forums,) but what about other Atari consoles and computers? The Atari ST was likely capable of basic NES emulation ("not perfectly mind you, but enough to actually play something.", "the graphics were horrid and the game was slow, but it worked."), and ROM plugin hacks were done on the console. One such ROM hack allowed the ST to become a Mac if you had a first gen Mac rom plugged into one of the back ports (and loaded the loader software), due to their very similar designs.

Uh, the topic title involves "Atari 2600". I'm pretty sure that that is a legitimate indication of Atari 2600.

Both are 6502 based. Other than that though, there's really no similarities. Possible, yes. Not likely however, as everything else is totally different.
