Dell Laptop Slow as hell in XP

Ok since I am starting this Digital Academy they provided us with computers.

I got a Dell Latitude D505 Laptop with XP, and they have copulate with everything on the computer, preloaded it with anti-virus and all the drivers for the other stuff they gave us.

Well, THIS DAMN THING IS SLOW AS copulate!!!

Takes like 10 secs after I click the start menu for it to appear, and when I click out of stuff, it goes really slow like Dial up painting but in reverse and with a program. (If that made any sense)

It is a 1.4GHz PentiumM with 256MB of RAM, and freakin' acts like the Original Pentium running XP (Hell maybe even worse)

They HDD is Constantly thrashing, it has been sitting there for maybe 15min and it is still thrashing, I have already looked at the processes, nothing eating up the CPU, nothing that is eating RAM.

Let me check here and see if this stupid ass school has this damn thing do a virus scan every damn time your turn it on.

EDIT: Nevermind, it all seems to be working now I think, but still seems allot slower than my P3 desktop with XP

Wipe it and reload a fresh copy of XP and then use AVG AntiVirus

Trust me it will be miles quicker

That is what I was thinking of doing.

I just need to make sure there isn't something in here that I absolutely need to do my schoolwork.
EDIT: ARGHHH OMFG!!! They tied the laptop to their proxy which is used for school, and I NEED that.

They expect us to use this Fuc*ed up XP Laptop to do our school work on?

most of active antivirus slow down a lot your pc.

256 of ram is not a huge quantity of ram and there are also better processors than 1,4 ghz.

I suggest try another antivirus or just disable/unistall it.

also other process running can slow down the system a lot, check the startup items.

click start, run, write "msconfig", this app should help you a little to remove unecesary apps and some unnecesary windows services.

I personally like to get allways my pcÂ´s resources free.

for that reason I dont use antivirus (If I got a virus,I remove it manually, with regedit,and some basic tools),I removed some windows services, defrag every week, and I overclocked the system cpu, ram and graphics firmware to get the max permonance posible.

Thats why I passed bioshock with a shader 2.0 patch and a overclocked AGP ati 9600 radeon LOL

Too bad they removed Run and the Command prompt

yeah, too bad, seems your machine is partial blocked and only the admin can access to some system tools (too bad), the laptop is yours? or you must take back the the Academy guys when done it?

If it you own fully the machine, I suggest you format the HDD deleting all crap and restrictions it have and reinstall everything carefully trying not overload the machine, cause you know now it isnÂ´t as fast as a 3D designerÂ´s machine

When reinstalling stuff, take a minute , and think what you "really" need at your machine, also remove all startup custom items, if you need something you can start it later, and not wait arround 5 mins to the machine load everytime you power it, it is useless at my opinion

Did they block the command line/Run or just hide it? Try the shortcut for run, [Windows Key]-[R]. If that works, then they just removed the icons...

yeah that is what they did, they just hid it.

If that doesn't work, make a new batch file that calles "cmd" or "command", or use the ReactOS DOS prompt thing.

If you can get into the admin account somehow, run msconfig, check the "Hide all Microsoft services" box, and deselect everything. Then select the proxy stuff and reboot.

Maybe it's a startup virus scan. If that's so, you might be able to disable the scan. Try letting it run for an hour or so; the scan might finish. If this is the case, hibernate instead of shut down. Mmy dad's work laptop has this issue, and hibernating is a relatively simple workaround. (After the scan completes, it's fine.)

What's it got on it? (Antivirus, OS updates, etc?) Did they re-image it before they gave it to you?

yeah they probably did.

Not to mention there is a big old dead pixel in the middle of the screen.

Figure out what the proxy is. An easy way to do that is to install FF (or use portable FF) and import the connection settings from IE. Then you can go to the options and look at what the proxy is.
It shouldn't be that slow. My Lifebook has a 900MHz P3-m and 256MB of ram, and it runs just fine.

yeah I have to return it too, once I can say 100%, I am gonna wipe the HDD and reinstall my own XP so it runs at a normal speed.

They have ghosting software, so they can fix put the laptop back to the way they want it easily.

what antivirus do you have? I've heard that Norton can be a HUGE resource hog and really kill performance.
