The wireless on my laptop (Averatec H3150P) kind of sucks. A lot. Really badly. It's 802.11b, using an 802.11g router. I'm only getting, for the most part, 2 Mbps, and the connection curls up and dies once or twice a night. Oh, I'll still be connected, but I can't access the Internet unless I turn it off and on. Oh, and sometimes, it won't recognize the wireless when I turn it on, saying it's a non-recognized USB device.
...which is precisely why I think it can be upgraded. Is there anywhere I can buy an internal USB wireless card for a laptop and install it? And would laptops of this ilk have internal USB ports instead of the card being hard-wired?
As an aside, I tried to max out the RAM by adding a 512MB card, which, in addition to the 128MB onboard, should give me 640MB. Not the 480MB Windows reports. Don't remember offhand if it said I had 256MB when I had the stock 128MB card in there, so I'm not sure if it's not using the 128MB onboard and taking 32MB for video, or if the 512MB module's busted.

Your laptop has not only crappy Wifi, but USB wifi at that. USB is terrible everybody, get over that fact. You need to either buy a good PCMCIA card, or pray that your laptop has a miniPCI slot or something similar and buy a card for it.
Your laptop might also have ram capped at 512MB; one of my old fujitsu lifebooks is capped at 256!

, Most of pc´s dont have internal usb (I didn´t saw one have it ), usb are designed for connect and disconnect easly external drives and stuff.I think minipci will work fine for you (only if your laptop have minipci slot at the mobo of course ^^)
if you have some broken, old, or unuser wifi router, it may have a minipci inside.
at begining my laptop hasn´t wifi, but I opened a broken router, extracted the minipci card,added an internal ufl (minipci antenna conector) to rp-sma (most know wifi antenna connector),I also installed custom drivers that increase rf transmiter power.
if I include a big and cool external antenna that have a nice wifi range.
