Would it be possible to put a small resistor on a voltage line so that the controller would automatically turn off when another was plugged in? If so what lond would I use?

hmm... I've said this in many threads. A pull-up resistor for an auto-controller switch should be possible. I'd say a 10K ohm should work fine.
