AT&T DSL modem suggestions?

We have AT&T DSL, and we currently have a Speedstream 4100 modem(we had a Speedstream 5100 before, until it died in a storm). Our internet will randomly go out, necessitating a reboot of the modem. This is very irritating, especially when in the middle of something like writing an email. I have heard in the past (from friends of mine with Comcast internet) that replacing the modem got rid of similar problems. I know one of them bought a Motorola modem and it solved their problem. Does anyone have any specific DSL modems to recommend (or avoid)?

My local thrift store usually has at least 3 DSL modems at any given time. When you figure out what you want, I'll take a look there and see if I can get you one for cheap (<$5).

Does linksys make modems? We have a Linksys router, and it works great, but I didn't know they made modems.

I'm still in the research phase of all this. I'm not even sure how to determine which modems are compatible with our DSL. Thanks for all the help so far guys.

Calling AT&T has never done us any good about anything. We are still paying for 3Mbs service and getting 1.5Mbs.

I had a similar problem (paying for 1.5M, and getting 128k ), the way I got it resolved going to the online interactive support. Went through their scripts to do in effect, nothing.(Don't get frustrated, and just tell them you rebooted the modem, et al., when they say) They then scheduled a tech to call me, told the guy the troubles. He says "Oh, I know how to fix that. [short pause] Your modem should reboot now. [wait a few moments for the modem to finish rebooting] Is the connection working and speed correct?". After a brief confirmation, all was fine.

Is the modem on the same circuit as something large? Some modems ship with small power bricks that can't handle small fluctuations in current, so a refrigerator starting to cool on the same circuit on the modem can disrupt service.

Additionally, it may be service work in the area, a big storm can damage a fair bit of phone equipment.

Well it's on the same circuit as three computers (plus peripherals), a TV, a 5.1 audio system, and scads of game consoles.

Additionally, it may be service work in the area, a big storm can damage a fair bit of phone equipment.

This isn't a new problem; we've had it for quite some time.
