I wonder if you guys realise that salvaging things you find comes under the category of "theft by finding"? It does in the UK anyway, and you can get arrested for it and a criminal record! 
I get my stuff from cheap car boot sales; including some old electronics boards; plus ones I have from broken equipment.

But, a trash-can is public property and by law no permit is required for search and seizure of anything inside of one.
This should allow anyone to take anything left out.
But to keep it on topic, last night I went around the neighbor hood to find something for this forum, I ended up finding a old big computer monitor.
