Windows XP password cracking...

My friend is having the problem, so I haven't seen it, but here is what he said about it.

There is two user accounts on the computer. Both of them are password protected.

How can he possibly find the password and get on the computer again?

First, at the Welcome screen, press Ctrl+Alt+Del twice to get the old style Windows 2000 login screen. Type "Administrator" as the account and hit Enter. (By default there's no password.) He should then be able to use the Control Panel to clear the passwords on the accounts.

If that doesn't work, he needs other measures. I use <a href="http://home.eunet.no/pnordahl/ntpasswd/ ... html">this boot floppy</a> for the job. It's pretty straightforward, even though it's all command-line. Just clear the passwords.

At the startup, start the computer in safe mode.
Once in, log in as "administrator", their shouldn't be a password set, as most people do not have one set for the safe mode account.
Control Panel - User Accounts and change the password from their.

Download their cd/floppy image (On a different computer). I recommend a floppy b/c its easier but if u dont have a floppy drive then go with the cd. Your computer should boot to cd/floppy drives before booting to OS (XP). Pop in the disk on the comp u want the password for and boot to it. Follow the instuctions. Then go to a computer and go to loginrecovery.com and give it the code that your floppy has or you wrote down if using a cd. They take the code and decrypt it. THe free service takes a few days but at least it works. If u want u can buy the service...

i know the topics a bit old but anyway...

i personly use http://home.eunet.no/pnordahl/ntpasswd/

it works with XP and maybe even vista if it is using the old nt password system like 4.0/2k/xp/2k3.

it even lets you set the new password although its all text command based
its easy to use even for someone that has never used DOS.

all you have to do is select the os installed (using 1 ,2 etc, it will list them all but i presume theres only one.

sellect the administrator account you whish to reset (if there is more than one admin (that includes standard usuars with admin premissions) and then set the new password. simple.[edit] i looked and it does for anyone that loses there vista password[/edit]

One comment here. I recently was in the same situation, and my impression was that the Adminstrator account is locked out if there's no password. (Ie, no login possible)

Well think again. Thats one of the biggest security flaws in XP.

The admin account doesn't appear unless you are in safe mode, but if the password was left blank when you installed it, then it will be just that.

well if you buy xp and install it then you are asked to set a password during the setup process but most people buy there computers with it preinstalled and it shows a one time screen that doesn't have anything in regards to that account (if i remember right)

so it is realy what type of installation you did when setting up xp.
i think M$ should have made it conpulsery like most unix systems root account
