N64P thickness challenge.

if i remember correctly, that is what Gordon1 is doing. his original thread got deleted in our 2 week revert back in april. it was in that thread that he said it was a zn-40. but you can tell from those first pics that it's not thick enough to be the zn-45.

yep, it fits, even with an internal battery. It is going to be one hell of a tight squeeze but, it will work. No d-pad though. I'll post some pics later today.

Well, In my opinion, The Zn-45 give you plenty of room. In fact, many times I have contemplated using a zn40. But I keep coming accross the problem f heat. Combining the heat of the batteries(IMHO should be inside the case!) and the heat of the n64 with small enough heatsinks to fit in the zn40, you would have to have a really good small fan. And considering the placemnt of each of these things, it would be hard to find room. I say, the best thing to do would be to build it into a zn 45 and then just shave the walls of the case down untill its tight. Really, I think the best challenge would be to do a zn45 case with an internal cartridge slot, where it goes into the unit, and not down the back(well, like the gbc.)

Summary:
An n64 portable with a zn40 can easily be done if you do not mount the batteries and cart slot internally.

Duh, just the boards take up almost the entire case, with the heat sinks... obviously. Also, please don't shoot your mouth off about things you have not done!

As for the heat, I am installing two fans to draw the air through the unit. IE, one pulling air in, and one pushing air out. I don't expect heat to be a real big issue, seeing as my n64 only got to 100*f after 20min of playing pod racer. That is with the stock heat blocks.

I'm sure everybody does use it, but that is not enough to hold the heat sinks in place, so the just put little dots of hot glue to keep em in place. The cpu and gpu are at the same height, but the ram is at a lower level. However, the stock blocks all rise to the same height. the problem with that thin of a sheet is that it may not be able to spread the heat that fast, but I'm sure it would work.

Things I have not done? Please! And what have you accomplished? Listen, I have built two completely successful portables from zn45's which are only a little deeper than the zn40's. I know the layout of the case, and I know what you have to do to get it all to fit. Let me tell you something: It will not fit with internal batteries, okay? No matter how much you want it to, any batteries worth thier time will not fit internally. And just where would you go about placing TWO fans? Now to that I can say: There is no room.

But go ahead, try. I'm not stopping you! I'm just saying, It would take more skill than most of us posses to get it all in there. When it doesn't happen, I called it.

Placing as examples:
The l64(all components internal)
my 6th n64p(external cart slot)
and the sixtyfree lite(external cart slot and external battery)

now, let us look at the cases:
L64: Custom formed to fit the guts
SS's 6th: Zn-45
Sixtyfree lite: Plastic sheeting and aluminum sides

Which one is the smallest? Hard to tell without exact measurements.
But simply put, the smallest portables used custom cases, not premade ones. But look at it like this: the ones considered the smallest have custom made cases, vases that were desinged with the guts in mind. The zn-45 and the zn40 were not, which is what makes them harder to do. And, judging by the fact that no one has done it yet, and many have claimed they could, I'd say it is impossible. You put all the guts in the case, and you say, "Yeah, this looks like it will work!" and then you get to construction. And you realize that you have to have things in certain places. All of a sudden,"Whoops, I cant do that." That is what has been happening with these attempts. So, get on with it. Prove me wrong.

Actually, I have never gotten my hands on any thermal paste! Id like to get some, and then just use that instead of superglue. Or a combination of both: Thermal paste in the middle, and superglue bordering the edges, maybe? I don't know, I've never used it before. Now, I have never heard or seen a large thin copper sheet used as a heatsink(until i saw marshall's build page), but that idea actually sounds like it would work. But what about all the dangers of large copper sheets inside electronics in closed tight spaces?

That could do some serious damage!

Also, the radioshack by my house has some digital camera style 1000mah lith batteries for about 6 bucks each. maybe if you arranged these around the case you could make room.

I'm kidding, No reason for me to yell either! That would be the most common question to come up anyways.

While it could be considered a possibility, it's probably not worth the space times the amount of playtime, and, equal weight distribution and possible amount of space for any rearrangement of cells is highly unlikely.

Really, I forgot, but last time I checked 6.35Ah was a pretty decent size battery.

hmm, last time I checked 2 25mm by 10mm fans would fit perfectly in the sides of the case.

You can see in the top corners. I even counter sunk the motherboard to save that much more room!
