Big....BOOM! Oh God!

Hey guys. Ontario had a few problems the other day. (Yes, this may be sort of a blog post, but admins do blog posts. Go cry about it.)

Some of you may have heard of the giant gas refinery explosion.

Look at the shockwave on that beast!

I felt it at my house, 45 minutes away. I could see the flames too!

Once I heard the bang and felt the shockwave, I screamed "....BOOM HEADSHOT!!"

Hahah.

This is the 2nd time this has happened near me. Once was right next to my house (House was fine, but the propane tanks that blew up and rained down on us, was scary.) And the other time was this time.

Has anyone ever had something like this happen near their town?
If so, got any videos?

Lets discuss explosions also!
How can an explosion kill you? Its just fire, heat, and shrapnel... right?

The only explosions I ever hear around here are the Power transformers blowing up, and that happen at least around a few times a year, but I swear it happens way more often than that, one time I heard like 6 transformers blow in one day

Other than that, when I was on vacation last week, we were near a quarry and we heard the blasting sirens (Which sound exactly like tornado sirens, who would have figured ) then I heard a huge blast.

BTW I was going to Cedar point, the best Amusement park on the Planet IMO, at least for Coaster fans like me

Ugh, I HATE Cedar Point! The Millennium Force is kickass, yes, but a 3 hour wait for pretty much every coaster there? I call BS. Sure, I know if you're dedicated enough to show up at the crack of dawn on a weekday you can get yourself a good spot, but I'm just not that dedicated.

My freind lived a block from that explosion. The shockwave knocked him off his feet. You could SEE the shockwave. I could see it for like 2 seconds before it got me. Best experience of my life.

If I remember correctly, just the force of an (large enough) explosion can kill you, as it compresses organs, causing traumatic damage to it mainly by the cardiovascular system. By then bleeding massively internally, and with no real hope of being saved, you can see how the force of an explosion could kill you. Add to it the heat, either via convection (through highly heated air), burning materiel, a.k.a. fire, and/or shrapnel, and you can see why an explosion can be deadly.

I was around an explosion that never happened. what does that mean?

last summer during vacation we went camping up by Niagara Falls our camp grounds caught on fire. the entire reception building burned down to the ground. there was a power cable sparking and cracking like it were lightning. anyways, the reached had made its way to the propane tank right next to the building, but fortunately one of the people camping there was an off duty fire-fighter who was on vacation and started controlling the fire with a hose from a maintenance shed or something before the local firefighters arrived on the scene. before the job was done, the real fire department had to leave and take car of yet another set of fires (those were arson) in another campsite. so they then had to return to finish the job when those fires were under control.
