RS near me also stocks less components. They seem to be trying to completely get away from their initial offerings, namely as a place where one could get things for their electronic-based hobbys... it seems all they sell now are cell-phones, children's toys, and junky consumer electronics. Like a cheap-mans Sharper Image.
Shhh! I'm not officially back yet.

The worst part is that about 2 years ago, they only had 5 soldering iron at my local one. They now have 1. Guess who bought the others?
What happens when they run out? It seems like these days, nobody wants to break something apart and fix it. In fact, why even pay somebody to fix it! Just get a new one, the poor quality gives stuff a low enough price to do so.
I am personally hoping for a DIY renaissance, and it is already helped along by the internet. And MAKE magazine. That magazine ROCKS, if you do not have it, get it.

I can't speak from experience, but Vskid already mentioned that he'd suggest the 14 mhz crystal as being the perfect balance of speed and playablity.stuntpenguin007 wrote:would a 25 mhz crystal be too much? I have a 14 and a 25, just wondering which would be best. If possible I would like to approximatly double the speed.

No, it does not. a 24mhz one is thrice as fast, and a 32mhz is four times as fast. It never stops mattering, but instead keeps getting more unplayable.
If you do this (stupid) mod, at least put in a switch so you can switch back to the original 8mhz crystal should you decide you want to enjoy a game.

Yes, it does. I have a gameboy color right here in front of me with a 69 mhz crystal, and it is running pokemon blue at just barely over double speed. You are completely wrong, it DOES stop mattering. The clock may be running at a crazy high speed, but that does not mean that the rest of the hardware can keep up. After just over double speed, the GBC can just not keep up anymore, and maintains that speed.Bibin wrote:No, it does not. a 24mhz one is thrice as fast, and a 32mhz is four times as fast. Don't spout off about stuff when you have not even tried it. Especially when someone else is sitting right there who has.
And the mod is not stupid, pokemon is much more playable now, and those are the only games left on my GBC that do not have enhanced, updated ports or sequels with a simailar style on a newer system.

Excellent
