Nintendo on the Go! Almost done, just have a few questions.

Post by Mario »

I have a couple questions I need answered.

1. How bright is the original LCD backlight in the PS1 screen compared to
say, three 13,000mcd LEDs? Is the energy consumption significantly different?

2. How do you measure how many mA something consumes? Like an
NES board)

3. Does anybody know where to find 3D CAD renderings of the NES
motherboard and the PS1 screen? Or, better yet, can anybody tell me
the dimensions, and I can model it myself?

4. How many mA does the 7805 on the PS1
screen deliver? Or, is it enough to power an NES board and three
13,000mcd LEDs?

New Question: 5. When I LED mod the screen, should I point the LEDs inward towards the screen, or down the channel that the lamp used to sit in? Should I diffuse them?

Thanks to anybody who answers these questions for me. :)

1. IIRC it cuts power consumption in half, or somewhere around there. Brightness is the same if you do a good job and possibly the brightness mod. I dont think I did the brightness mod to my snesp and it looks pretty good.

2. No idea. lol sorry

3. I dont think there are any. Try looking in the stickies. I know theres a good pic with the dimensions of a ps1 screen.

4. I dont know the exact ma, but the 7805 on my ps1 screen runs my snes and the leds just fine.

I believe the total draw of the PSone screen before the mod, is about 900mAh. With the mod, close to 400mAh. It's fairly significant.

To measure the amperage, you need either an ampmeter, or a multimeter. They should sell them at your local electronics shop.

I don't know the measurements of the NES board, but I know the PSone screen is 5 3/4'' in diameter at its longest length. And about 3/16'' in height.

The screen's 7805 outputs more than enough amps to power a NES. But it's not a very good idea to power it in that way, it'd decrease the life time of the 7805 by quite a bit.

Thanks both for your replies. Valium, I have a multimeter, how to I measure mA consumption?

Go to google and search for measuring current.

So, to measure the current draw of an NES board, I'd just hook it up in series to the power supply?

What if I have an analog multimeter that only measures up to 250mA?

New question, sorry for the double post. When I LED mod the screen, should I point the LEDs inward towards the screen, or down the channel that the lamp used to sit in? Should I diffuse them?

If it only measures up to 250mA, then it really won't be much of a help. Nes's use more than 250mA, I know that much.

I just put them down the channels like the original backlight, it seems to work fine. And yeah, you should diffuse them.

Thanks so much. One more question: Can you tell me how many mA the NES and the modded screen each use so I can estimate the battery life?

I would, but I don't know the mA of the NES.

Down the channel. Dont diffuse them, thats what that plastic rectangle is for

But they don't put much light out the sides...

So should I diffuse them or not? :?

Diffuse. I compared four non-diffused to three diffused and got better results with three. I puts more light into the rectangle anyways!

What MCD LEDs did you use?

Thanks for your response, by the way. :)
