Ahh....well you can take yur thick tip and file it down to make it finer...that's what I'm did to my tip, it was very dull but I sharpened it up and it works okay right now...granted the soldering iron is probably as old as me...but it works! (That's around 16 years)

Well, it would probably be easier to ask my dad to bring home the thin tip that it would be to ask forgiveness for filing down his thick tip.

Actually, that's quite a stupid idea. It may be working, but it sure isn't meant to. There are several layers to a soldering tip, and the inner layers aren't meant to be making the needed contact. Helluva lot safer to just spring on a new tip.

The tip is all one solid thing..no layers...it's probably just a long tip of lead with a tiny point....I have to buy a new one anyways....

And I can't find tips to my iron anyways...

I tend to do one project at a time, and focus to point of obsession on it - had to drag myself away (literally) from my multi-platform project in order to work on this compo entry - now I won't get back to the other system until this one is finished! My wife actually gets jealous of the time I spend doing project work "rather do that in your room than be with me" blah, blah, nag!

You would be surprised at how tough maple and cherry are. You know the nose cones of Nukes are made of spruce?
