you dont need vac forming stuff to make a good case, some of mine are sort of an example of that, it might take a LONG time to make a decent one but the results can be VERY nice. i for one am going to start working on the design for my new portable snes, i have a comission coming up anyway and i figure might as well kill 2 birds with one stone so to speak(I don't have vacuum forming equipment, etc)

Absolutely. For example, someone could make a system that hasn't been done before, eg Amstrad GX4000 for example, however there is nothing creative about that, just a different system in a similar shell. Or you could make something small; or unusual .lovablechevy wrote:but with a contest like this, it's gonna be hard to actually determine a one winner rules all. splitting up the prizes seems much more realistic. it'd be different if we were all told to build a portable using x system. then, sure. there would be a definite winner. but having an open ended contest makes that near impossible.
Kind of you to say that. I'm curious what Life of Brian will come up with too.ShockSlayer wrote:Actually, I cannot wait to see what you two(LoB and Bact.) are making, usually you guys make impressive stuff.

For my part, i'm happy to give an outline of my project - going to make a small system, unusual; using a PSone screen, and interchangable game systems. It will be about 30% the size of my multi-platform system as it will only take small boards this time using D-pad and some buttons. It will be a mini version of my multi-platform system, light and functional. I have the screen already, and most of the components, getting more parts over the next week or two. Build time will be quite tight. I will post a step-by-step guide to making the system on my website and document it here too, once system is completed: mid-end August.
Understand what you mean, the "comments" on these news sites are annoying and demeaning; however I like the exposure!mothatrucka wrote:I DON'T want that exposure. I'm not building this for those typo-happy little punks, I'm building it for my own amusement and use. I don't mind showing it here, but I have no desire to attempt to read through those "comments".

It does if it is still alive.Triton, stuffing game systems inside a dead squirrel does not count as portablizing.
LEAKED INFO:
I just talked to him and he said he is building the case from a solid block of titanium. He can't back down now!

So triton's figured out how to finally fit an SNES into a GameGear. And I was so close! Curses! Worst feeling in the world when you chop down a system and you cut one trace too many. (By the way, this is just a guess since this idea's been thrown around a bunch in the past, even by myself.)Triton wrote:Oh god i just figured out what exactly my portable and case donor will be, i am truly a sick and twisted individualim not going to say exactly what yet but if i did you wouldnt believe me because it sounds almost impossible even to me lol. expect pics soonish, just need to get the go ahead from my buyer
Good luck with your portables guys, if I had the funds I'd join along.

If only the system i was doing was so simple! honestly a GG snesP would be easy now that we have the retro duo and FCtwin. this idea is completely absurd and will be totally awesome if i can actually pull it off!So triton's figured out how to finally fit an SNES into a GameGear. Hello from Bacteria!
The project for the SNES in the multi-platform system is basically complete, just needs the top section of the case finished.
I have decided to concentrate on work on my BenHeck compo entry. It is going to be good!
I touched on the project previously.
This is going to be as small as you can make a portable with a 5.4" screen, as you see in the pic - after all,
The concept is similar to my multi-platform system, but will play the following systems (plus a few others):

My system (just worked out the footprint) is as below. To give an indication of size, I have put in a SNES cart, GBA and GB cart. I will be making a step-by-step guide for making this system as I progress; and will set up a new menu item in my website to this effect - possibly make a start on Monday on this project blog. I know this is unusual, to make a how-to-make guide for a compo while the compo is underway,
but that's me - give away the secrets!!
I am going to hack apart GameBoy carts as the basis of the multi-platform interface and an old cart from a broken GBA mobo (in pic). I am aiming to have a few systems ready in time - I have five GB carts to rip apart at the moment, hope to get more over the next days (need several more)!
I am making this system using opaque black perspex this time - shiny and cool!!
The system will be powered by two NDS Lite Li-ions, each 3.7v, so I need two to make 7.4v; rated at 1800mAh; so I should get reasonable playtime life out of them - maybe an hour and a half or so on a set before needing recharge (time will tell when I test them). Making a system small gives compromises after all. These batteries are only 50mm x 34mm x 7mm. They also have protection circuits built in so I don't end up with a

Anyway, just a guide, it will look a hundred times better than this of course:

Yes, a shaped curved system!!
At least this proves it is a new project, started after the compo started. This system will need a fair bit of work, to put it mildly, hence until I finish this project my SNES system for the multi-platform system is on hold until after the compo ends. (It is completed and works great though, just needs a case top made).

I'm doing this on a zero budget myself. I've got a few spare consoles laying around, so I traded some stuff for a screen, ripped another screen off a video phone I pulled out of a dumpster, and I'm getting my raw supplies like wire and stuff from an old computer. If you happen to stumble across the parts, give it a try! You'd be surprised what you can find for free. lolbioniclebert wrote:Good luck with your portables guys, if I had the funds I'd join along.

I know. You can see that from the upload date on the pictures in my album. Besides, that project is Loooong dead. I mainly posted it for the purpose of showing off as well as just giving ideas, I had no plans of entering it. You really think I would try to pull a fast one on you, Bacteria?
And while I am not using ANY part of that old one, I am doing something similar. I am going to put a gba sp in a GBO as soon as I get my last few parts. Does that count as a portable? And are we allowed to enter multiple portables in the compo?
Bacteria, your project looks very interesting. I cant wait to see the final result.

How come? If you succeeded it would have made the GP2x better to use probably.palmertech wrote:I know. You can see that from the upload date on the pictures in my album. Besides, that project is Loooong dead.
Thanks mate! It will need quite a lot of work. I am hoping this one will be sheek and shiny, although time will tell.palmertech wrote:Bacteria, your project looks very interesting. I cant wait to see the final result.
