Portable-Palooza (voting thread opened!)

After seeing the prize, TRITON CANT ENTER! He'll win, and then I'll be sad.

Anyways, My portable is coming along nicely, Just got in from 5 hours of work.

And LoB is making a snes, or a n64. No other console has an r button like that.

Actually, Splitting it up sounds good. How about:

12 prizes right?

12/3 = 4

4 prizes per person = 3 winners

Ok, winners just chose in order

1st place chooses first, 2nd place chooses second, 3rd chooses third, ect

Oh, and maybe a title change for each.

We all knew hailrazer was awesome, but then he began giving away amazing prizes. He is now officially the best member of these forums of all time. You rule, man!

Bacteria, what's more fun than actual prizes AND fame?

My personal guess on what's going to get the most votes is definitely looks, compactness, and capabilities. If it's as small as possible, looks professionally made, and can play for hours or has tons of features (AV jack, 2nd player, perhaps a modchip or overclocking, etc.), then that is what I consider "best" and will get my vote.

All in all, this competition will only get as competitive as the participants want it to be. My goal is to complete a portable within the time limits. Others may have different goals, such as winning hailrazer's piles of loot or making a portable system they've never made before. Like the old saying goes: you get out of it what you put into it.

Indeed.

There isn't much point in just making "the same again" or like has been made before, innovation is interesting. Bear in mind that whatever we make we will no doubt keep, so it is important to make whatever system you do one that you want to make, that is more important than going for a win. As we Brits say, "It's the taking part that's important".

I think we should have another goal here guys. If we all blast our portables in the last days of the compo then there won't be much exposure on other sites like Engadget. I think we need to drip-feed portables by uploading the project completion vids and pics when the systems are done.

This is only a friendly compo after all, I am sure no-one will be looking to make duplicates; if they did they wouldn't get the popular vote here anyway, so no point.

Honestly, I just want to build my machine, but it would be nice to get a prize (though I doubt I will be up there even if I do finish on time because of the nature of my "portable), but it would be nice since I'm working on this with a couple friends and it would be nice if they could walk away from the project with something.

Whilst the prizes are very generous indeed, if I were to win I would keep the GameCube screen and donate the rest of the items to others on this forum. Genuinely!

As I doubt I will win this compo (I don't have vacuum forming equipment, etc), it is probably academic anyway, but hey, my intentions are good!!

Time is a bit short over the next fortnight, I am hoping I have enough time to complete and submit my project(s). From the 19th August onwards I have potentially a lot more time for project work (holiday).

Actually, with me, simplicity wins. Because it is always nice to be able to hand someone a portable and then just let them play it. Cuz if it has a bunch of strange stuff, then It's not as appealing to use. Personally, 've run out of resources to be able to benifit from a bunch of extra useful-ish crud.

In any case, I dont think extra features will help it win. I think a smooth completion of the main goal: a portable handheld system, will be what wins. Actually, I cannot wait to see what you two(LoB and Bact.) are making, usually you guys make impressive stuff.

Actually, that was one of my reasons for waiting until the end to submit one of my portables. I DON'T want that exposure. I'm not building this for those typo-happy little punks, I'm building it for my own amusement and use. I don't mind showing it here, but I have no desire to attempt to read through those "comments".

As for making duplicates, at the moment, aside from GameBoy and GameGear, I don't have any portable devices. For the moment, I'm free to experiment with whatever system I'd like to. lol Of course, the fact that I'll be able to grab a portable when I make my weekly ferry commute is what's really appealing to me.

but with a contest like this, it's gonna be hard to actually determine a one winner rules all. splitting up the prizes seems much more realistic. it'd be different if we were all told to build a portable using x system. then, sure. there would be a definite winner. but having an open ended contest makes that near impossible.
