SNESp battery questions.

Post by Mikeyman64 »

Hey, I have just finished my portable SNES and I am having some battery issues.

My main problem is that when I use the battery, a Sony Infolithium NP-F330 (I think 7.2V 5Wh), as opposed to my AC adapter (7.5V 2.0A) I get a strange wobble that seems to be in sync with the audio signal, which I though was a wiring problem, but is not. So then I though it might be that the voltage was too low to support the device fully, but I tested the battery after a fresh charge and it rated just over 7.5V!

I'm at a loss now. Does anyone know how I can get rid of this wobble?

On a side note, is there anything I can do to get better battery life? I can get about 30~ minutes out of one charge on half volume playing a non-FX game. Obviously a bigger battery would help, but is there anything I can do in addition to that?

I wonder if there's some kind of cross-talk thing happening between your audio and video. Perhaps the AC adapter puts out a better draw and prevents this? I'm speculating, I don't know for sure if that's even possible.

If this was one of my projects, I'd replace the video lines with a larger wire and see what effect that has. Aside from trying that, I'm stumped.

The only time I've gotten wobble in the screen in time to the audio is when my batteries were running low. Perhaps your batteries are just not holding a charge well?

I agree with mothatrucka about using larger gage wire, assuming you're using thin wires.

I'll definitely try larger gauge wire. Would a low mAh rating effect anything but the longevity of the battery? Or would it just be the voltage/amperage rating causing problems? I would hate to have to redesign me battery slot for an entirely new type of battery.

What is the capacity of the battery? I know you said 5Wh, but I never think in watts. What's the mAh of it?

I believe it's about 2200mAh.

I tried changing the video, power and ground wires to thick 20g wires, and it didn't help at all. Could adding a capacitor with an output of 7.5V to the positive battery lead help? If so, how would I search for such a cap?

EDIT: I figured it out. It was a diode that I placed between the positive battery lead and the power switch. I placed it there so that I would never fry the battery if I plugged it in while the battery was still attached.

I also fixed that weird black fuzz on the left side of the screen (first mentioned that ages ago) but fixing a bad attempt at the brightness mod.

Looks like I'm good to go! :D
