just wondering if you guys had any suggestions on a cheap laptop that's really affordable (doesn't have to be new) i still have my hard drive and ram from my last laptop so it doesnt matter about the hard drive size or amount of ram also id like something small.

well, if you don't want the asus EEEpc, how about the Asus EEEpc? Look for some old thinkpads and such. You can also get the new version of the old iBooks (looks like the macbooks today) for really cheap.

Not all laptops use the same hard-drives. my laptop uses a SATA hard-drive.

How cheap is cheap? I'd just go on ebay and see if there is anything you like that you can afford. You can usually save a bit if you find one that doesn't have any ram and/or hard drive, just make sure yours are compatible.

sorry forgot to clarify mine is a ide 2.5" its out of a Compaq presario v2000
not to worried about speed since i have dual core 2.6 GHz with 4gb of ram and a 500gb hard drive not to bragg joking.

lifebook b2610 2620 or 2630, only difference with each is processor speed 800, 850 and 900mhz p3 respectively, you can get any of em for under 250$ shipped and they are great laptops, i have had 2 (a 2610 and my current 2630) and they work perfect for everything i do (skype, im, web browsing, watching videos, streaming media, music etc) and they are about the size of a 5 subject spiral bound notebook and get 2-4 hours of battery life give or take

i paid 180 shipped for my b2610 and all i had to do was put in a hdd, my 2630 cost me 222$ shipped

One thing to be wary of though, with used laptops in general, is battery life. My Lifebook's battery gets me about 1.5-2 hours of use, depending on what I'm doing. Apparently Triton's Lifebook gets more (2-4 hours), and I think vskid told me his gets around 2.5hrs. Keep in mind all three of us have practically the same computer. "battery not guaranteed" or similar messages in eBay auctions usually translates to "5-10 minutes of battery life", as my dad found out with his Thinkpad.

Mine is a B2630. Mine came with 128MB of ram, which was ok for running one program at a time under XP. I've upgraded to 256MB of ram (the max, worst part of the laptop) and it can multitask fairly well. It runs Warcraft 3 with only a slight slowdown when there is a lot going on. I think the auction for mine said that the battery wasn't guaranteed, and I got lucky and it was pretty good. I can get at least 1.5 hours out of the battery while surfing with the backlight all the way up using wireless, maybe 2 if I have the backlight at half and really run it down. It came unplugged the other day, and after 35 minutes it was at 70%. I've disabled the low power warnings once, and it ran for over half an hour on 0% battery.
Overall, its a nice small laptop that won't break the bank.

thanks i decided im getting i lifebook (can't resist its GOT A TOUCH SCREEN!!!) pay day is Friday so once i finishing buying the rest of the parts for my NESp (%50 done) i''ll find a good one on ebay

Be careful. You WILL become addicted to it. I always try to touch the screen on other computers. It isn't the best thing to use all the time, but its great for images that are links. I even hate to cut my nails because this adds another use for them (legos are the other ).

And get the extension "Grab and Drag" if you use Firefox, its good even if you don't have a touchscreen.

If you want a small-ish laptop with a screen better than 320 by 240 pixels, look for a Toshiba Portege. I've got a 7200 and it's fine for word processing, internet access, and everything else you'd need a laptop for. (Aside form games, unless you like Sim City 2000, which is an awesome game.)

Here are the specs for the 7200; there are newer ones in that series. (Mine has a "Designed for NT 4.0 / Windows 2000" sticker on it. )

I agree, the Eee isn't a very good primary laptop, especially if you're planning on doing a lot of typing.

If you save up a little more, you can get a decent refurbished laptop for $400.
