HTPC Overhaul - Need Parts Recommendations!

Post by bicostp »

(Or: "I'm tired of dealing with bargain-bin hardware".)

Well, my HTPC's acting all flaky again, and it's apparently not a RAM issue like before. (One of the sticks that was in there crapped out.) It's also stuck with a 3.2 ghz Celeron D, because the motherboard doesn't support anything newer than the first generation Core 2 processors. It's been giving me memory errors, rebooting when I tell it to shut down, and it never cuts power to the PS2 ports. There's nothing visually wrong with the motherboard (that is, no blown caps or burn marks). But I can't really complain, it was dirt cheap when it was new and still works.)

Current prospective setup:
It sucks when the minimum system requirements on game boxes in the store make you go ":(" instead of "".

This machine will mostly be used for games and multimedia. I plan on re-using the hard drives, disc drive, power supply, and case from the existing setup, if at all possible.

This will get built up after I (hopefully) get a job, so you can be somewhat liberal with the budget. (But don't get too expensive, $600 tops.)

I'm asking because you guys should be more in the know about performance hardware than I do. :P

Need:
  • - MicroATX form factor*
    - 2+ GB of RAM (DDR2 800?)
    - CPU cooler no more than 3" or so tall.* (There's a structural part of the case in the way.)
    - SATA and IDE
    - S-Video Out on the graphics card
Want:
  • - Wolfdale C2D (Apparently they run cooler. Cooler CPU = no jet engine fans whirring away during the movie.)
    - At least somewhat future-proof
    - Quiet CPU cooler
    - PCI Express (it's basically taken over anyway)
    - DX10 capable card (In case I ever decide to downgrade to Vista)
    - To eventually connect it to an HDTV through a DVI->HDMI cable
Don't Care:
  • - Video card vendor
    - SLI, Crossfire, etc.
NO:
  • - AMD processors
    - PC Chips or ECS motherboards (they're garbage)
    - Random vendor websites like freshofftheboatdealz4u.co.fu. Let's stick with Tiger Direct and Newegg. ;)
    - Freakin' expensive cases
    - Water cooling. (Don't feel like dealing with it. :P)
*If the existing case is retained. <s>I have an old Pentium II chassis in the garage I could cannibalize and modify for horizontal HTPC use, which would accept a regular ATX motherboard. There's obviously a wider selection available, and they might have more features for the same price as their smaller brethren.</s> Screw that. I like the MiniATX case. :P

Questions:
Is the performance difference between the E7000 series and E8000 series worth it? What about quad processors?
Radeon HD 3000-something or nVidia 8800 whatever?
Should I just forget about it and get DDR2 RAM and a Conroe for my existing flaky setup? (Though I don't want to waste more money on that motherboard.)
PCIe 2.0 is backwards-compatible with 1.0, right? If the motherboard only supports 1.0, is it worth getting a 2.0 graphics card?
Is it worth the effort to find a Micro-ATX motherboard to fit the square case? (They seem to lag behind a little in amenities.)

Is this a decent start?
Any and all advice is greatly appreciated. :D
Thanks!

EDIT: Adding a "Current Working Set" quote box to simplify things.

EDIT: Changed to 2 gig RAM sticks, though I'm not sure if the added cost is worth it, given it's going to be running a 32-bit OS for the foreseeable future. :?

Looks good. 8800GT is a kickass card.

No AMD? gumble....

Motherboard wise. I am partial to Foxcon or Asus.

I'd get one 2Gb stick. Leaves more slots open for future upgrades.

At least somewhat future-proof
Impossible.

What can I say besides I haven't had very good luck with them? (Intel / Motorola processor fanboy :P) Besides, you have to admit Intel's finally gotten it right and is handing AMD their butt on a silver platter these days.

I don't see any 2 gig <s>dual-channel DDR2 800</s> sticks at Tiger Direct. :? Besides, if the system's limited to 4 gigs, and the motherboard has 4 slots... Provided it's not a server motherboard the memory controller might not see 2 gig sticks.

 Of course it's impossible, I meant "something that will still hold its own in 5 years". None of this "It's only been a year since I built it and it doesn't meet minimum requirements for any new titles besides Diner Dash" BS anymore.

Yah yah what ever :P I am still rocking a Socket 939 A64 3200+

The mother board you picked can support up to 8 gigs. If you run a 64bit OS you can take advantage of it. 32bit OS can only read 4 gigs.

Well, If you want to hold future proof as far as you can, I'd go with quad-core. Besides being a bit more pricey, why not? Will hold up in time, and its hella fast too. :P

we'll be blown away by the first generation of processors and stuff taking advantage of fiber optics.

- AMD processors
I love your late for AMD.

IMHO Quad Core processors aren't worth it.. I have an IntelCore2Quad Q6600 (Quad core... duuurrr) and I barely use more than 2 cores. Ever.
Things I need to purchase for my NES Laptop:
1X PSone screen
6X 1.2v 3500mAh sub-C's
1X 1/8'' to RCA stereo Adapater
1X Radioshack repair kit

..yeaaaaah...

Okay, I've pretty much settled on this setup, but the video card is still up in the air.
The card's definitely going to be a GeForce 8800 something or other (tired of ATI's BS), but which model? GT or GTS? Apparently that Intel board supports PCIe 2.0 (source). Is it worth getting a PCIe 2 card with slightly lower specs versus a PCIe 1 card with higher clock rates? What about noise and heat? Or should I shop around for 9XXX series cards?

This one worth considering?
EVGA GeForce 8800 GT Video Card - Dual Slot Edition, 1GB GDDR3, PCI Express 2.0, SLI Ready, (Dual Link) Dual DVI, HDTV

Unfortunately this won't see the light of day until I find employment. (But, at that point, it will.)

@Bay-Wolf: Wow. That's a lot of info. Thanks!

@ketchup: Quiet is good, yes. The problem is, that side of the case doesn't have very good airflow. (All the fans are on the other side; the only air circulation comes from the PSU's intake fan.) Here's the info page on the manufacturer's website. It's also pretty jammed with wires and stuff. I think a card with its own fan is in order. Either way, I'll jerry-rig some kind of ductwork out of plastic parts and use more cable management; that should help airflow. (A CPU duct made out of yogurt containers brought my main machine's CPU temp down from 66 degrees to a bit over 40, at maximum load. Those old Socket 478 P4s ran hot.)

That page also has the PSU info on it. 400 watts should be adequate, right? (A couple different PSU calculators put the pending setup at about 320 watts.)

EDIT 2: The stupid thing crapped out AGAIN. Time to hook up another hard drive to see if it's a corruption problem.

EDIT 3: @timmeh: Looks like the GT is based around the G90, not either of the recalled chips.

For a video card, I'd recommend this. A 9600GT performs slightly less than an 8800GT, but as this is an HTPC, I assume that a silent card would be appealing. It may get hot, but as long as there is decent airflow in your case, you shouldn't have to worry.

Before you buy from Nvidia, perhaps you should make sure you arent buying a recall part:

There shouldn't be any worries there. The effected chips are the G84 and G86, which are the 8300GS, 8400GS, 8500GT, 8600GS, 8600GT, and 8600GTS (source). The 9600GT is a G94, and the 8800GT and 8800GTS are G92's so anything you buy now should be fine.

Q6600+8800 FTW!. I'm running that now and the only problem I've had is having to run Crysis at medium.

What? I can run crysis on medium on my 7900GT and single core CPU......

Bic go for the 8800GT. Its a kick ass card. If you want I have a 7800GT that I can sell for cheap. PCE-express :D
