Big Screen Help

I got a 50" Mitsubishi VS-50501 big screen for free. It is a 3 tube, rear projection tv that was made in 1997. The problem is, when you push the power switch, the power light comes on and you can hear the relay click, but then it turns off before showing any picture. The guy I got it from said that it happened before and they had it fixed by a technician. Apparently there were 3 "sensors" (or thats what the tech called them, probably to spare having to explain) that had gone out on it and needed replaced at a cost of $35 each. So I think that that has happened again, or the power supply could be going out (read some stuff about that being the problem with some other models). Does anyone know what/where the "sensors" could be? I could take some pictures of it if it would help.

I have absolutely no idea what they could be based on that description, but when I hear the number three and rear-projection/CRT I automatically think color guns. It would explain the no picture, I dunno about the powering off, though. I'd assume a bad power supply.

Okay. The reason its not showing any picture is because of a short on the board somewhere. (I know this for sure. I see this problem all the time at the place I work.) The reason its turning off and not rising in smoke, is because of the saftey fuse in the TV. Its hitting that fuse, and the fuse wont allow thw TV to turn on. The short could be anywhere. A blown cap, damaged board, ect ect.

If it was any of the sensors (he means the "Yokes"), it would turn on and stay on and product a blue screen most likely.

Decided to give up, gave the TV away today.
But...

I got another TV. Its a Mitsubishi VS-5043, looks almost exactly the same as the other one. This one actually displays video. But, the green tube is out of convergence on the left side and top, and the menu only allows you to adjust the red and blue tubes. So does anyone know how to fix it? The pictures show what I'm talking about (yes, Lego Star Wars is sweet).

You need a new "yoke". Its basically the light tube that displays the certain color. They can run anywhere from $50 - $300.

Also, some TV sets allow you to buy 1 yoke by itself, but sometimes you have to buy all 3 yokes just to replace the one thats broke.

Also, once you get the yoke you have to open up the TV, and then replace the yokes. Its easy for someone like me who knows a lot about TV insides. (I've worked at a shop that does TVs). BUT it may be next to impossible for you. I know your smart with computers and such, but TVs are completly different story.

You COULD send it into a shop but that would be even more, due to mark up and due to labour.

Dude, if I was you I'd just pick up a new or used TV.

Not one thats broke.

You can get used plasma's or LCDs for like $400-$1500.

i have a big screen aswell that does the same thing you are talking about. its a hitachi projection tv, which looking at it right now is actually turned on for some reason. it is from 1996. my dad thinks its the power switch but i know it has to be something internal. I would rather fix it then have to get a new tv sense other then the turning off the picture and sound at random, its a good tv. so what is it that i need to replace inside this thing. also if anyone knows where i can get a new control panel for the front please let me know, the current one is falling apart(well the plastic on it is anyways)

Its not the power switch. Its the protection curcuit. Something inside the TV has shorted out, and the protection curcuit is switching on to help protect the rest of the TV.

I figured thats what it would need, just checking if there was an easy fix. I take no offense to your lack of confidence in me, I have no idea how I could replace it without damaging anything even more.
I don't really need this TV, it was more of a nice to have sort of thing. I'll just watch for other free big screens and see if I can find one that is an easy fix.

I hope you come across a nice one for cheap or free. Check craigslist, and such. (You can probably find some cheap or free on there.)

Canadian users wanting cheap things: Kijiji, or craigs list canada.

Yep, a local news station has a classifieds on their website that is more popular here than Craigslist. Thats how I found the first one (and got rid of it again

), and the second one was from someone we know in my neighborhood.
