desoldering help

Ok so i got a soldering iron and a desolder thing but i cant figure out how to get the solder out. as soon as i try to suck up the solder it hardens. i must be doing it wrong or something. i have just had it with this. do i even have the right tools?
Oh and its a super nintendo mini i am trying to desolder.

Are you pulling the iron away before you try to use the pump? The solder should never have the opportunity to harden, because you shouldn't pull the iron away until you've already sucked the solder up with the pump. Approach the joint at an angle with the iron and keep it there as you approach from the other side with the pump.

Edit: Look at this. It's a low frame-rate and it's pretty blurry (not my video...), but it should show you the basic idea.

Sometimes the solder won't come out but as long as the pathway is still open its ok.
