I need help finding out what the CPU socket type is and dell isn't being a big help

Socket 478. It's not worth the effort of finding one of those processors, and even if you do it will be very expensive considering the minimal performance boost you'll get out of it. With that socket, you're stuck deep in Pentium 4 territory.

If you want to upgrade, throw that turd of a motherboard away and get a new setup. (Assuming this isn't one of those wacky proprietary Dell motherboards. It looks like regular Mini-ATX stuff to me.) That old machine is really limited:

- No PCIe, or even AGP slots
- Socket 478 is old junk
- No dual-core processor support
- Maximum 1 GB of PC2700 (333mhz) RAM
- No SATA

Price out some Motherboard and CPU bundles or barebone kits from Tiger Direct or Newegg. You'll get a far better improvement for your money than buying old outdated parts, and you'll get all the modern expansion options like SATA and PCI Express.

Yeah, the 2400 was Dell's cheapie PC about 3 years ago that cost about $400 (including a CRT monitor) and only had a CD-ROM drive and 128MB of RAM with virtually no expandability. My grandpa bought one.
