5 pin USB pinout?

Post by woox »

I took apart a portable keyboard today and found that the USB (normal) cable instead of having 4 wire pinouts, it had 5? WfF? I though USB 2.0 had only 4 pinouts, what is the 5th for?

Do you mean there's five pins in the connector on the end, or five wires? If it's five wires, that fifth one is actually soldered to the metal of the connection itself and serves as a ground.

You will probably find that that extra pin is known as pin X. You usually find it on mini usb adaptors. It is a way of making a cable proprietary because you can put a resistor between pin X and another cable so the device will recognize wether or not you are using the proper cable.
