Making The Portable

Post by Skyone »

Couldn't really resist the title.

Triton (John) and his cronies are coming out to my town for some nerd anime convention. Me, project_failure (Ryan) and his friend are gonna join Triton and friends at their hotel to chill and participate in chilling activities, much like we did at Midwest Gaming Classic.

I was talking to Triton, and we thought up a pretty decent idea.
Making The Portable

Background

After deliberate discussion with my main man John, we’ve decided to attempt a fun experiment.

From the 2nd to the 7th of July, John and a few others are going to be flying out to my hometown for a leisure trip. Naturally, I’ve decided to impose and stay with the crew in the same hotel as them (kidding of course, they’re making me pay twenty bucks a night). Along with me, another friend of ours (Ryan) and his buddy are also spending a few nights with us.

Although we haven’t sprung the idea on Ryan and the others, I’m sure they’ll be glad to participate in our project!

Synopsis

Me and John are moderators at the Benheck forums, a forum that takes on discussion of video game console hacking; namely the concept of converting home consoles into on-the-go portable systems. More information on these designs can be found at the Benheck forums and at Benjamin Heckendorn’s benheck.com. John and I have created a few portables of our own as a hobby, and we’ve decided to band together and create a portable when we hang out.

So I’ve got the supplies and tools (I doubt airport security would let John and the others bring over too much), and we’ve all got the skills. Naturally, we were simply starting the project with fun in sight, and nothing more. However, after watching several gaming marathon webcasts (CameronBanga’s Zelda marathon, and the recent MarioMarathon), I became inspired to create some type of live cast of our own.

During this live video cast, we’ll be modding some type of video game console into a portable, from the case to the custom electronics. Specifications on the final product have yet to be determined, but will hopefully be decided on in the next couple of days. We’ll be casting during the nights of the 5th and 6th of July hopefully, and perhaps during the days too, if we can’t squeeze everything in! Again, specific times and dates are subject to change, and will be announced sooner or later.

Finally, much like the previously mentioned marathons, we’ll be deciding on some charity to give whatever generous donations we may receive. There will be a PayPal account set up for said donations. Even if we only get a few bucks, or less for that matter, it’ll be going to a good cause.

Wish us luck, and thanks for reading this! More information on the project will soon be released.

Just like the portable we made at MGC several months ago, we'll have to make the thing in a hotel (maybe not completely in a bathroom again hopefully).

I advise you all to tune in for the live video cast/chat we'll have going, and perhaps donate a small bit of cash to us that will be forwarded to an undecided (as of now) charity. It'll be fun!

In any case, anyone have any suggestions on what system we should mod? Case materials, etc.? Keep in mind that we're doing this in a hotel room, so it'll be tough to cut casing and such. I have a 5" Zenith screen we're gonna use, a couple NiMH battery packs (7.2v 4Ah when in parallel), and enough consoles/controllers to feed an army (what).

Thanks for reading, peace!

This sounds interesting enough.

As for system ideas. How about a Mattel HyperScan portable? Or a Atari Flashback 2 with Cartridge slot mod portable?

Who knows if the Namco Portable will ever become a reality? :P

Alright people there is one thing we need from you. We need support. Go and tell all your friends about this awesome Idea. We are not sure on a console yet but it will probably be one that has already been done due to time constrictions. That does not mean it won't be original. Thanks for the help. :D

Sounds like fun guys.

I'd say if you want a console to mod, follow the KISS moto, Keep It Simple Stupid. I would suggest an SNES, quick and easy to mod, and even better for building a case for.

Atari Flashback 2 is nice, but unless you have an old/broken 2600 it's kind of hard to find a cart slot. All though I do have both of those items, all I'm lacking is a screen, so if you guys need/want a Flashback for the project let me know I'll mail it out with a check for the screen and you can build it on the vidcast.... one more thing, I get the completed portable, [sinister laugh]

One last thing, don't know if I missed it but what's the url for the vidcast?

Due to the fact that's it's all tentative right now, you didn't miss it, there isn't one yet. We'll be using a cheapy Lego Webcam (:P) on a laptop in the hotel via ustream.tv most likely. I'll post any updates in this thread and on my blog.

Thanks for the support and willingness to send out parts, but seeing as the cast would start on Friday/Saturday, I would doubt they would get here on time.

Not a problem, I have a ton of consoles to pick from, and I know John is bringing his SNES parts and such.

We'll keep you updated!

I doubt any one will be at the hotel that early so we might just go to the beach for a bit. :D We are bring STUFF for the portable. Radica, PSone and screen, assorted parts etc. Dibs on couch or bed! I slept on the floor at mgc.

Let me reiterate: I hate you guys. Oh well, DC kicks ass I guess, and I met a kid whose voice sounds exactly like you, Sky. It's kinda creepy actually. :P Have fun with this, sorry I couldn't be there.

My dad flies at least once a month, and sometimes he has horrible flights. He has shared half his seat with fat people, sat next to a lady that smelled like she had bathed in perfume, etc. So just because you got lucky this time doesn't mean it'll always be that way. :P
