How do I fix this? Solder stuck on PCB...

Do you have a technical question that doesn't really fit a specific console? Want some general info on electronics, hacking, making cookies, etc? Here's the place to ask! Go nuts.

How do I fix this? Solder stuck on PCB...

Post by Dr. KillGood »

As you can see from these pictures, my soldering skill is the sucks.

I don't even know how but these two got soldered together and I cannot get them apart.

De-soldering iron - Nope.
De-soldering braid - Nada.

So what can I do? I can't just cut it with a knife there is a lead or two under it!

The lighting sucks in most of them but you can see it.

If the desoldering braid didn't get it heat it up with the iron and try a wet sponge. You may need to trim those wire ends off to be able to get down to the solder.

Ok I know my soldering sucks, you don't have to get all up in my face about it!

Wet sponge? + Electronics?

You don't have it plugged in with power running through it now, do you? And you don't want a dripping sponge either. Just let it dry before you put power in it and it;ll be fine.

Ok so let the sponge absorb it? If it does not work I can blame you?

You aren't heating the pad on the PCB up enough. If you heat both the pad and wire up it should flow where it belongs.

A lot of people don't want to take the time, but using soldering flux helps A LOT !!!

It makes the solder flow better. Just smear a bit over the wire and pad and then heat up the wire/pad and apply solder.

Also make sure you allow the solder iron to heat up the wire and pad a little more and allow the solder to flow.

Patience is your friend when soldering.

I thought soldering leads have flux cores?

some solder has it in it (rosin core) however applying flux on top of that allows a more fluid and proper connection

I may be wrong, but your board is most likely toast. look on the black blob in the second picture the trace has been ripped up on two of those connections.

Or a 99 cent spring-loaded vacuum. Press plunger until it locks, place silicone nozzle near liquid solder, press release trigger. Zoop, most of the solder is sucked up and solidified. Press plunger to eject it and reset the vacuum.

TIN WIRE BEFORE SOLDERING IT, ESPECIALLY IF IT'S BRAIDED.

I had the same problem and that didn't help me.
