psp / nds combo power supply.

Post by Famos »

hi everyone,

im looking into making a power cable for my psp(slim) and nds(fatty). not sure if I should call it a power cable or a charger cable. but I know id like it to be all in one plug in.

I have modified a psp travel case to hold both a psp and a nds. so it’s like a little armored suitcase. it works great at holding them and games. it also has a place to hold cables and stuff, but I don’t like loading 4 cables for 2 systems (wall plug and car plug for each system)

I know next to nothing about schematics, volts, amps... basically any of the things required to pull this off. I am good a listening and learning, so if anyone could point me in the right direction that would be great.

now that I have set the stage, let me ask my question.

how would I go about combining the psp and ds power cables into one splitter? the sony power cables are pretty universal and id like it to be the main wall plug. I would mount a transformer box (or what ever is needed) inside my case. and I would want to just carry that sony power cable to plug into the wall. that’s my first question. possible? and how do I go about it?

2nd question would be to take it a step further and add in car adapter to the mix. so I would still have the transformer box on the inside that split power to a psp or ds, still be able to plug into AC wall power, and also be able to plug in 12v car DC power. possible? how would I go about it?

the ideal height of this would be under 7/8", but could be up to 5"tall x 6"wide. I could live with a switch on the inside if power has to be channeled for AC or DC. id rather have a large box inside the case that is solid and in one spot, than to wind and unwind cables as needed.

thanks for any help on this project.

If I remember right, they both need the same voltage to charge, so that makes things a little bit easier.

Looking at the official plugs, the Nds outputs 5.2v and 450 mAh, while the Psp's is 5v, and I don't know the mAh because my friend is borrowing my Psp. But I'd imagine they're close to the same anyway.

Basically, they're the same plug, but with a different jack on the end, so what you can do is split open both cables near the jack, wire the positive line from whichever plug you choose to the positive lines of both jacks, and then wire the negative line from the plug you chose to the middle pin of a (I guess they're called toggle switches) and then wire the negative lines from both jacks to opposite pins, so that only one gets power at the same time. Make sure there aren't any bridged connections, never know what could happen then. Now, you don't HAVE to solder for this, but it'd be recommended, if you don't want to, you'll have to use electrical tape, or heat shrink to keep your connections together, and unbridged.

I'm not exactly sure that the same would work for the car adapters, so don't touch them until someone else could confirm that it would work.

Also, this is probably common sense, but just in case, make sure they aren't plugged in to the wall while you do this.

thanks for the reply,

yeah the plug for:
ds= 5.2v , 320mA (wall wart plug type thing)
ds= ?.?v , ???mA (12v car adapter) dont actually have this yet...
psp= 5v , 2000mA (power brick type thing)
psp= 5v , 500mA (12v car adapter)

so i figured it might be somewhat close, i was not too sure what affect 0.2v could have on a ds. or how much the mA can varry. ill do some searches on what mA means, and why one adapter can use 2000 and another can use only 500 on the same psp.

Well, .2v is very little, there's a very good chance that nothing would happen if you hooked it up straight.

MAh is short for Milli-Amp Hours, meaning how many milli-amps per hour it outputs, or uses, depends on context. 1 Amp is 1000 milli-Amps. Amps are what determines how good your battery is, the higher the mAh, (or Ah) the longer the battery will last. Lower mAh when charging just means it'll take longer for a full battery, I don't imagine that's too much of a problem for you. Just don't try and run 2000 mAh into the NDS, I'm not sure it can take it.

i found http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications ... CmmVCjCmmV it has both 110v AC and 12v DC built into the same plug.

with and output of 5v DC (150-500mA) through USB. so with that device i could just make a USB cable that splits to a PSP or a NDS. not exaclty what i had in mind but it would definitely cut down on my cables and plugs.

*edit*
i also found this http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/20009 ... mage.html?. im all for modding stuff but i get real worried when it comes to electricity.

thanks again for the input, and if anyone else reads this thread later on and has more ideas on a good way to convert 110vAC/12vDC down to 5vDC (and split it to 2 systems) id still be willing to try something.

later
