Info on replacing batteries in GB Carts

I'm looking for some info on battery replacement. I've done it a few times before, and truth is, I'm sick of using solder, as it's dangerous to heat the battery up, and it's a pain to do. Does anyone know how they're originally installed? Is there some kind of tool that punches the metal into the battery like that?

I've heard you can use electrical tape.

Yeah, you could solder wire to a flat piece of metal and then tape that onto the battery.

Or just tape the wire.

Just sand the battery then apply some solder it is fine. I have replaced most of the batteries in my snes games this way

You can solder to batteries no problem, as long as you're quick. (Hey if my neighbor can do it with lithium RC airplane batteries...)

You could also buy or make a coin battery holder from thin metal, or steal a CMOS battery holder from a dead motherboard. You might have to mount it sideways somewhere but it might work...

I've done the "solder a battery" thing and had it go very bad more than once. I find it safer to just avoid it.

bicostp- Never thought about using the battery holder off an old mobo. That's a brilliant idea. Thanks!

personally, I use electrical tape, but I read that Spot-welding is how it's really done. there are instructions online on how to make a spot-welder out of an old camera or something.

Yes, the original tabs are spot welded on. Soldering wires to the batteries works, but sometimes you can ruin the battery without even knowing it. The membrane in the battery can be damaged by much less heat than it takes to melt solder. Be VERY quick if you want to do it that way.

Best way is to just buy some batteries online with tabs pre-attached. I bought a few dozen on ebay a while ago and replaced them in a bunch of my carts. The tabs on the ones I bought were a little too wide, but a little trimming and they fit in exactly like factory.

Electrical tape will work, but it certainly wont last.

I dunno, its a tight-fit anyways, I don't imagine the electrical tape coming off. also, if you use an R2032 instead of R2022 (I think those are the models), it has the same diameter as the original batter, but it's a bit thicker (making it a more snug fit) and will last a bit longer.
