Need some help with the N64 joystick.

Hi all, im extremely new to hardware modding (also new to this forum).

Ive got a N64 controller with a broken joystick, so instead of buying a replacement part and having it broke again in some time i want a PS1 analog stick on it (original). But its quite different, because N64 uses photodiodes (or something like that) and the PS1 controller uses pot's. Is there a way to use them?

Oh, and i broke the PCB of the N64 joystick too, so no soldering on the PCB

Do they use same signals, or...

Please help, as id like to see how a PS1 joystick plays with a N64

You can't use a ps1 analog with an original N64 controller. However, if you use a third party N64 controller, you can replace the joystick with almost any other joystick you can find because the third-party controllers all use potentiometers instead of photodiodes. Most joysticks use potentiometers.

Are you sure? Im sure ive seen something simmilar to that..

Also, anyone knows where i can get a N64 game connector? Mine's all bend and not tight (worn out), sometimes a game doesnt work, so i have to wiggle the card to make better contact. Id like to replace it (i prefer a new one)

Yeah, you can't use a pot joystick on an original N64 controller without heavy modification. For third party N64 controllers, it is as easy and wiring the new one up.

I'm sure a bunch of people here have a couple from fried N64s. I know I have 4 or 5 of them.

DaBeast - you posted this also on AcidMods, so I replied there too.

Using third party controllers had been covered, in regards to the cart slot - you can use a small screwdriver and tease the pins out a bit more on the N64 cart slot, so they make better contact, otherwise you can easily replace the cart slot with another as they detach from the mobo easily, without soldering. See my threads for more details if you need to. You can buy N64's on e-bay or car boot sales very cheaply - either use their slot or use a better one instead and save the hassle!
