Chat?

don't get me wrong, this is a nice and active forum, but if you want to get a chatroom for each thread and ensure its an active chatroom, you'll probably need more. I've seen a chatroom flop on a forum before (granted, it wasn't as active as this one, but I think it was starting on its way). I've also seen another board where it has worked, and that board just happens to have tens of thousands of members.ghosstt wrote:grossaffe wrote:yeah, you probably need a board a little bit more active for a chatroom feature to work out.Your kidding right?
You know that little button that says "Post Reply"? Well, thats what you use to discuss the topic more thoroughly.grossaffe wrote:so if people wish to discuss a particular topic more thoroughly, they may.ghosstt wrote:Why would you get a chatroom for each thread?
If there is a chat system, it would have to be the same for each page in a javascript window that follows as you scroll up and down. Anything other than that doesn't seem like it would be worth it.
I guess you'd have to see it to get what i'm talking about. I think one of the main uses of it is for real-time conversation instead of hitting refresh so many times, especially if everyone's watching a sports game or something. you get all the comments as the game happens.vskid wrote:You know that little button that says "Post Reply"? We've had chat rooms in the past, and I think there's still an IRC thing around somewhere. The problem is they're used for a little while then abandoned.
The most recent incarnation is this:

I think the problem we ran into was that really only a handful of members ever used the chat. I don't think we ever had more then 10 people in a chat at one time... I might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure.
As for channels, I will agree that the IRC chatrooms were nice, although they weren't able to log any of the conversations. Ben might still have the good-old PHP chatroom, which was slow and ram hungry, but also kept a 96 hour record of conversations. The PHP was nice, but the IRC I still think won me over.
If we are to get a chat going again, it's be best to have some sort of topic or point of focus. I'm not saying the short weekly chats we once had were bad, but lacking any sort of focus and structure.

Yeah, I tried the chatroom thing... didn't work... I think what I should have done with the script is made it to where it automatically logged people in when they signed into the forums... I had some trouble with it though; I'm not the greatest in PHP, so the chat room is a little incomplete at the moment, but it technically works, shows you who's logged in, and has emoticon support.
