Has anyone BUILT an X-Box portable?

Just kinda wondering... I've never taken one apart but I'm sure it's outrageous. So, any portables?

I'd love to see one but I doubt anyone is that ambious. I've seen pics of th inside and the guts are rather big. The mobo is accually a loptop mobo, then it has seprate cards for the LAN and video card, a big honking power supply, the hard drive and the dvd-rom.

As I said you want to make one, laptop style is best (if not the only way), put the hard drive on a laptop hdd and then good luck craming the rest into the case.

And Ben although you are for sure the master of portables I dont think even you could do this. Remember yourself calling the thing an SUV, sounds funny making it a compact right.

I'm planning on making one in the future becasue I love the xbox. But as of right now I'm not planning on it. I probably have to use some D size or a laptop battery to power it. The motherboard isn't to bad thickness wise it's pretty long and wide though. The hard drive can be replaced to a much smaller but the DVD drive is where a lot of the thickness comes from. Sorry if this doesn't exactly answer your question but hopefully I'll have one done by next summer.

The Xbox uses off the shelf PC parts. I'm sure you could replace the DVD drive and HDD with slim line ones to reduce the size dramatically.

vb_master for the most part all of the Xbox componaints are off the shelf. There are securrity items in place to see that only Microsoft appreoved software.

Also if your going to mod the Xbox buying and installing a mod chip would be but a little bit of work for something like that.

sure, that replacing the dvd drive thing sounds nice, but according to their guides you must keep the xbox's dvd drive intact, which means that the mod is basically useless for a portable.

You could probably make it smaller it would just take a lot of work. I'm prttey sure the obo they use is found in some computers but it's definitley been modified for the xbox. It would be really cool if you could use one of these in a portable xbox.

if you found a way to make the mobo work on a battery then you would still have a portable the size of an original NES and thats with taking out the dvd drive (possible with a modded xbox) and and laptop HDD (also possible with a modded xbox)

and the xbox MOBO is a MOBO built for the xbox and used on individual ma it do other things but yall shold hit up www.xbox-scene.com sometime

The pinout on the Xbox's mobo is the same as any mini-ITX mobo, you can buy something like the WP-60A and use that as the new power supply. The DVD-rom I'm still sceptical on (unless someone gives a link) and the hard drive is hardly a problem. The Xbox isnt going to get very compact just like a portable of the dreamcast is limited to its mobo size and is going to be think as a result of the GD-rom (just a comparison).
