I made a motorized scooter out of an old gas powered rototiller motor. It was pretty amazing. I used a centrifugal clutch. I used wheels off of a hand trolley and used a chain drive. I had an aluminum platform, and old bmx bike parts for the handlebars. I used the brake mechanism to control the throttle. It worked really well, except for starting. When I was younger it would accelerate very well, but I tried it this year, it was very sluggish. I guess this is the only downside to using a gas motor. I've used scooters made out of weed whacker engines as well and they suffer from the same acceleration problem. As long as you stay away from hills you would be fine.
Sounds like it was geared too high. The clutches burn up when they can't fully engage and are slipping the whole time. Gearing can be a deciding factor with these things. I did a quick search and found that utility ATVs have about 30-60 horsepower, yet have dry weights of about 500-700 lbs and probably way more friction than a bike/scooter. Because of their gearing, they can easily get that weight moving. Being able to change gears would probably help a lot (start low and move up as needed for speed).ghosstt wrote:Ya. centrifugal clutch on mine too. It was such a weak motor, I burned the whole mechanism up till it was cherry red trying to push me. haha

as a skateboarder I'm going to recommend you go for something more scooter-esque. A skateboard+no experience+20 mph+a motor=certain death. I've done 25mph skitchin on a friends car once and its not a speed I would like to go for transportation to say the least. Even Segways only go 10mph. Also, 15 miles? I hope you are just going like 5 miles each way and just want to be on the safe side. Even still, a car would be a million times more practical, hell, even a bike would still be a much better transportation solution. I mean, if you want to just make it to be ridiculous for the hell of it, by all means go for it, but I wouldn't count on it for transportation.
