N64 arcade laptop idea(N64-AL) in progress 56k wrning

Post by newguy101 »

EDIT: fixed pics
ok so heres my idea for my N64-AL. i dont think anyone has tried to do this yet so i hope its original. i have my arcade buttons on order, already have my 5" zenith screen led modded(unless i can find a bigger one cuz i think it needs it). as for the joystick, i think i figured out how to make it arcade style but havent messed with it yet. also N64 is on order as well. just whipped this up to get an idea of size and thought id post it.

TOP CLOSED and size compare with coke can(im from kentucky we call all carbonated beverages "coke" not soda)
Image

FRONT CLOSED notice power switch on the left (forgot to add the 4 controller ports)
Image

SIDE CLOSED with rca jacks for a/v out and plug for wall unit
Image

FRONT OPEN i used my broken spark plug boot for the joystick :D . only thing i could think of to allow it to close with the joystick is put a hole in it, any other suggestions would be nice
Image

TOP OPEN a close up of how i plan to arrange my buttons, the L and R and Z buttons will be black i just didnt have black construction paper. and in the upper right is the start button, which will be red, and no red paper. from what i think this will be a good button order but not sure so suggestions appreciated again.

BACK OPEN as you can see this is where i plan to put the cartridge slot

SIZE COMPARISON

i will probably have to make the case about 1/2 in thicker once i get all my components and maybe have to make the case a little wider or longer but it will still be a arcade style laptop. Why arcade style and why a laptop? i wanted a laptop because i wanted to let is stand alone and be able to play 4 players on it with my friends without having to look down on it. i forgot to put the controller ports on the front but it WILL have 4 controller ports. as for arcade style i wanted to have something different but also the n64 requires a good battery power and the board isnt that small and imo it would just be too big for a proper handheld, thus arcade style lets you sit it in your lap and allows for good batteries as well as having a more spacious area to put it all into.
the base of the laptop will be made from 3mm sheet aluminum(i get it free). aluminum instead of plastic for the base becasue with arcade controls ill be applying more pressure on the case. and as for the portion holding the screen, im not sure yet. aluminum will be thick just to hold the slim screen and speakers so ill probably use plexiglass which also cuts down the weight. i may even make the top portion really slim and put speakers into the base, haven't decided yet.

Dimensions: (from the cardboard)
Closed: (HxLxD) 2 5/8" x 10" x 8.5"
Base Thickness: 2"
Top Thickness: 5/8"

again, the base will probably have to be another 1/2" thicker and the top part bumped up to 3/4".

I don't know if it is just me, but it sees like most of your pictures are broken. Only the bottom one works for me.

Besides that, I like the idea! Arcade style controls would be awesome. It may be hard to get the stick working correctly as most arcade sticks are just switches and have 0 sensitivity.

Yep broken pics.

Also, Livefor, I met Jeremy from PurePwnage once. He lives about 45 mins from me. xD He's a really cool guy. Not obnoxious at all like regular celebrities.

That's awesome! From all the interviews and real life interviews I've seen he is a pretty down to earth guy. I mean, he is a comedian, so they have to be good with people.

Newguy,

Every once and a while I can actually see a couple of pics. Try a different hosting website like imageshack or photobucket. I like the button layout, I think it would be comfortable to use. I'm assuming you are getting rid of the D-pad altogether? I can't wait to see this come together, but I'm still woried about the thumbstick though.

I think the joystick might get in the way of the PSone screen mobo??

Very large joystick, you might consider a shorter one as otherwise the whole assembly might move side to side when you play a game?

Maybe you could just use an N64 joystick, but with a detachable stick to make it longer and more arcade like. That way, you'd have more room for the screen and that would solve the problem with arcade joysticks having switches.

Although, I bet there are some arcade games with analog controls, but they're probably expensive and hard to wire to an N64 controller.

Good luck with the project though, the idea is great! Super Smash Bros would play great with arcade controls!
If you're looking at this post and it was made before 2008, just ignore it.

well the joystick size will probably be a bit smaller, probably about 1/2 - 1" shorter. ill try to make it detachable but that may be kind of hard to do.
and the screen wont be in the way from my measurements just barely anyway, if i have to ill just extend the length of the case a bit to make it more of a comfortable fit.
and as for the assembly moving side to side, not even possible. im welding my aluminum case together as far as the top control plate and sides, the bottom will of course be detachable. some arcade sticks are pressure sensitive, but i plan to try to extend the actual nintendo joystick 1st before messing with an arcade one.

also i may add a small d-pad to it just for the sake of it, what are some games that actually use it?

Some games do use the D-pad, at least in part. May as well have it as not. Still think it might be more practical to have a (normal) short joystick shaft, then it will allow the case top to close properly?
