PS2 Hard Drive

I was wondering for a PS2p,if PS2s run without their DVD drive installed. If they do,how much power do you think that will save? I'm thinking of using a HD instead of DVD Drive for space, power, and ease of use. Also,Does anyone know what voltage the PS2 uses?Finally, how would one go about rewiring the power and eject buttons... Open to suggestions...

i don't think the slim ps2(the one to portibalize) has native HardDrive support. please correct me if i'm wrong. which one are you going to portibilize?

Call me crazy, I'm trying to portablize a Fat PS2. I figured that if I can get rid of DVD drive, I can save a considerable amount of space as well as avoiding the read speeds of the DVD Drive, noise,power consumption, and avoiding the tendency for slim to overheat.

You can run a fat PS2 with out the optical drive. I did it for years when i used to play FFXI. My optical drive failed so i just ripped it out and made my ps2 a FFXi exclusive machine. I don't know how much power you would be saving really. the slim does not have native hard drive support but if you feel like being risky there is a post somewhere on the net (try some googling) of a guy who found all the IDE pin outs on the slim ps2 board.

Theres this or the pinouts you were talking about and proof of it working (sorry haven't got the time to read through all of that right now but will as I'm quite interested in it)here just download the .rar file to view them.

hmmm now that looks very inviting. That fat PS2 that i have has now been swapped out with a slim. So maybe ill be doin a HD combo mod soon :0 to save my game discs.

Is the Slim more power efficient than the PS2 Fat? I googled it but all I get are the power brick ratings which can be misleading since they can provide more power than the console actually needs... Anyone know? Also, I think that if any PS2p can remove their HD and replace it with a 2.5" HD via some bridge adapter, I think you might save somewhere around 12W on it which may add to your runtime. Any responses are appreciated.
