speakers and headphones playing at same time?

So I'm using a Zenith gamecube screen (ps1) and it comes with 2 headphone jacks. I ripped one off but kept the other. Now when i plug the earbuds in i get both working. Did i forget to do something or do i need to use some kind of switch?
