DeathNote (possible spoilers)

Post by ghosstt »

Wow.. I just finished the series.. It was so dam addicting. I can't wait to start the live action films. The ending on the anime was kinda lame for me though. I like the whole thing with ryuuk thought.

*LOTS OF SPOILERS AHEAD!!!*

I just started watching it again with my mother and brother yesterday. We had been watching it pretty constantly up 'till episode 26; the one after L dies. Dunno why we decided to stop there , but it looks like we're finally going to finish it this time since my brother's on summer vacation. But, my brother and I already watched the whole thing a while ago; before we even attempted to get our mother to watch it. It's such an amazing series; my second favorite. My favorite is Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, which me and my brother collectively decided on a few days ago once we finally finished the second season. We think we'll be able to get our mother to watch that with us next, after Death Note. :P We made her watch the first two episodes of Death Note with us, and after only that much, my typical anti-anime parent said, "Yeah... I'm gonna have to see how this ends." Amazing.

Back to the show, some people consider episode 25 (the one where L dies and Light "wins," becoming the God of his new world) to be the "true" ending. It makes sense. The Near/Mellow arc seemed tacked-on to me. Me and "Ecksem Diem" were actually discussing this very thing via PM a few months ago. He actually brought this to my attention. After the series was over, I was so biased that I couldn't see anything wrong with it on my own. But looking back, it seems to have two endings, in a way, doesn't it? :? This is kind of odd.

So, which side are you on? L's or Light's? Which "ending" would you have been happier with? Personally, I think the only way they could have possibly done it is just how they did; kill them both. But, I kinda was rooting for L. In the beginning, I was all for "Kira." I thought it was a good thing that he was doing. I had a little bit of "But... what gives him the right to decide who lives or dies?" in my mind, but I was still on his side. Then he turned into a crazy b@s7@rd. He became far too power-hungry and took a turn for the worse down to Maniacal Town. So, eventually I converted to L-dom. :P This started after I saw how easy it was for him to kill anyone that got in his way, such as Maki... that was a heart-breaking episode. I hated Light for that.

That's a valid point.

You could look at it as a reflection of about human nature. Ie we're all greedy and evil inside, it all depends on whether that side of us is allowed to be nourished. Can we resist the temptation? Is too much intelligence in a person in fact dangerous if he's equipped with great power? Is it better if the masses are "stupid"? (Stupid as in normally intelligent, ie not overly bright)

Well, I must agree to the tacked-on Melo/Near saga. But the was I look at it, there are 3 sagas in the whole series.

1.Pre-finding of L's true identity. Light was still testing the waters, and was running stuff out of his room.
2.Light joining the team, and the whole misa sub-saga[with the 2nd kira] and light doing the intricate notebook swaps while imprisioned.
3.The whole Near and Melo thing.

I think the reason it feels tacked on is because it skips like 6 years or so, and then just throws you down into it. I'm not sure what side I'm on though. At first I wanted to see Light win, because I wanted to see how they would portray him and such, but then L turned out to be a beastly character (as well as Near). Killing them both would have been cool. Or having a 3rd shinigami come down and then another Kira would appear would have been a good twist. He would kill everyone related to the original kira investigation, and then he would end up dying. Just a thought.

I've only read the comic, but the second "half" (after L dies) was really boring for me, seemed like just a repeat of everything that happened.

Well, I guess it is more or less the same plot again with a few new characters. The one thing I really disliked is how they disconnected from Light after the 1st or 2nd third of the anime.
