PSjumper

Post by Mechlord »

K. Been planning this for a while. Decided to tap the knowledge of the forum.

Project Goals:

Portable PSOne (Evidently)
Able to switch between displaying on the inbuilt screen and av out ports.
Has 2 controller ports and one memory card port (2nd)
Has inbuilt memory card
Able to switch between inbuilt controller and controller port 1

Here is a plan diagram. I am open to suggestions.
http://www.emergencybananaproductions.c ... iagram.png
Recognized issues: Battery charging, controller 1 switching.

Question: How do I battery power it? Using 6x1.2v rechargeable batteries results in 7.2v. Is this sufficient? Will using another battery damage the console? Is there a way to charge batteries inside the device or is it just best to charge them externally? (As in the diagram, someone insists this will work. Will it? Is there anything like this available?)

Question: I want to have the input for controller one switchable. How do I do this? A large switch? Parallel wiring? Having the cord and plug of the internal controller project from the side? (As per diagram) Will that look terrible?

Question: How do I make the av output switchable? Since a lot of tv's only support standard av and the screen uses component by default (is this right?) does it need to be switched?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Question #1: 7.2V is enough.
Question #2: Switch between grounds.
Question #3: PSOne LCD uses RGB not Component. You can also switch between LCD and TV Out by cutting power from LCD.

Hope you can understand my post.

If I remember correctly, the PSOne screen takes in composite video signals, but can be modified to accept RGB signals as well.
As far as switching video output, all I can think of is to have a connector connected to the PS video out, as well as having the LCD connected there (if that makes sense). You could allow for a switch on the LCD power supply in order to cut power to the LCD at that point as well, or let it be and dual screen (maybe).

No... pretty sure it takes composite, either NTSC or PAL. You might want to check the links in your own signature even. :)

PAL or NTSC, the PS original outputs composite on the pins the PSOne screen uses.

Maybe I don't understand you at all but you're wrong!
I've made RGB adapter to original PSOne Screen. It uses: composite video, audio l/r, ground, red, green, blue and 5V power on signal. I can connect all RGB hardware - SAT receiver, GameCube, DVD etc. I will post my work today. I've tried to send composite throught PlayStation AV-In connector and it wouldn't work. I think this connector is for RGB input. You can connect Composite by Jack connector on rear of the screen.

Sorry for my English :/

Woah, an argument.

So rgb. I got it confused. Is it the default for the screen? Does the Composite need to be connected to the screen for it to work?

IIRC, it is possible to input RGB, it's just also more hassle than it is worth (unless you absolutely demand the highest quality, in which case you'd also want to remove the anti-glare layer). By default, you can only hook up composite- to make sure, do a search on the forums or Google, there are certainly enough resources to double check such a thing. However, I do not know about the PAL screen, admittedly.

Composite doesn't need to be attached to work per say, but it helps in getting an image.

EDIT: I was wrong; there do seem to be native pinouts for RGB.

Finally made some progress on it. (As in I actually started)
I now have a box which I am keeping my project in.

Image

Desoldered the female connector from the motherboard and figured out which polarity to connect to which part.

Rigged it up to some (5) AA batteries. (Soldered directly onto one battery because there were no single battery holders)

Image

WAS going to go to Jaycar (Local electronics parts shop, in case anyone didn't know) but found the shop empty. Turns out they moved. Went to Dick Smiths (Another one, not as good). Picked up a 7.2v 200mAh Rechargeable battery pack (Also got some slide switches, a 6xAA battery case and some heatshrink):

Image

It's about 13cm long, 4.7cm5 wide and 2cm deep.

Image

I'm wondering whether to use this or to go to Jaycar (New location) and get some (6) rechargeable AA batteries and a charger or wether to stick with this. It seems that the pack I got would be larger than 6 AA's in a case. But then they would have to be removable. If I use the pattery pack I plan to have it fixed internally with the charging plug reachable through the side to plug the charger in, parallel to the console of course. (Would I have to Switch that to stop it from being dangerous to the console?)

Anyway, what battery/ies should I use?

The problem with the battery pack you have is that it is NiCad. This type of battery pack has memory. If you are OK fully discharging the battery pack every time you use it then it will be ok but nimh will last longer for weight and you can top them up instead of fully discharging before use. Jaycar has moved to bigger quarters down the road. If you go to the website you will be able to get their adress. 6AA nimh batteries will do a great job. You want ones with about 2500mah. I would use the battery you have at the moment though. Just make sure you discharge it first otherwise you will suffer from the dreaded memory effect

Ack!

Came home yesterday with a goodie bag from jaycar. Included NiMH Batteries, switches and other good things. Today I connected the batteries to the console and it worked but suddenly as I touched the console it turned off and restarted, turned off again and then the blank image on the TV screen started wobbling for a while. Now the power light goes on but the console does not, as in there's no image and it doesn't attemp to spin the disc up. What is going on here? Is this just a broken fuse or something else?

I think it's symptom of broken fuse. Try to bridge fuses.

Are the batteries charged. Try running it off power point. It also sounds like the symptoms of flat batteries.

I finished charged the batteries shortly before I put them in. But I'll try it.

Is there a diagram of where all the fuses are?

Also, some hours after it stopped working I tried it and it worked for a short while and then stopped.

Wall power dosen't work at all. But I think that might be because I rewired the playstation end plug on the official power supply.

If it turned off after a whiles use then worked again for a bit that is probably batteries. If in doubt use a multimetre.
