If you want something to practice on, get your fingers used to chords. Pick a set of about 3 completely different chords and practice your finger dexterity. For me, I had to do a crap load of dexterity exercises before I could really do anything that sounded good on a guitar. But dont forget your strength either. If you have no strength then your stirngs will sound all crappy and different, kinda like a buzzing noise; very annoying.
Also, like most things in life; stay with it. If you want to play guitar, dont stop because you hit a roadblock. Try to found out what is happening and if you get so frustrated, just do some other project. Come back when you are bored or something. I have about three songs I am trying to make right now. Most of their info is in my head, I dont usually write stuff down.

I just started playing guitar a couple months ago, so I don't know awhole lot.
Since you are starting out I would recommend "wildwood flower" (I know it sounds retarded) for your first song. It's really easy to learn, and it sounds ok when you get the timing right.
Has anybody mentioned notes yet? half notes are notes that hold out for two beats, and a quarter note is only one beat. A beat is like when you tap your foot to the music. One foot tap=one beat
Notes don't really show up in internet tab, but they are in tab books.
