A philosophical phrase... I want (Non-inflamatory) opinions

Hrm, the only Hindu reference I can come up with, involves burning offerings to the gods. It would make sense that the food had been prepared beforehand then, but a candle in this context makes little to no sense, as it would take something akin to a bonfire in order to burn the food.

The reason food (or whatever was to be offered) is burnt in Hindu ceremonies, and unless I am way off base here (which I doubt I am too off base), was that it became smoke- an incorporeal essence, which eventually dissipated, as it went to the gods' realm, or something to that effect.

There may be a Buddhist catch to such a saying, but I am not much more knowledgeable in Buddhist practices than I am in Hindu; considering that Buddhism was originally a Hindu philosophy, I daresay the practices of burning offerings to the gods, if existent, would not have changed much.

In other words, I fail to see how Hindu or Buddhist beliefs would play much upon such a saying. However, Eastern Philosophy is in itself, very difficult and at times incomprehensible to the Western mind.

It's a Hindu quote

We were doing them once for a lesson and they sorta have a knack of being poorly translated. The best one was

"He shoved a hot fish up his navel"

Try getting a philisophical meaning out of that.
