CPU Upgrade

So I was running CPUz to see if I could install a version of OSX86 on my computer and I came across that I have an LGA 775 Socket.

My Motherboard is an Intel i925X Chipset using the LGA 775 Socket.

Now, I'm still using an old 90 nm 3.2 Ghz P4 with HT and I was looking around for a new CPU.

Now, will my Motherboard work with this CPU, or not? It uses LGA 775, but I don't know if there are some other complications like the chipset or my current CPU being 90 nm.

Thanks in advance I really just want to upgrade this old Dell.

Get an E8400 instead; better bang for your buck. Also, you better get a better power supply since the trashy 300W one yours has will probably not work.

That p4 will work just fine for OSX86 though. I recommend Kalyway.

You should be able to know if you can use it based on socket type. The big problem is that Intel changes socket often, and makes you buy a new motherboard and chip frequently.

You should be able to squeak buy with what you have there. A torrent I downloaded said that the version of OS X86 was set up for both SSE2 and 3, so you're Pentium 4 chip should work.

If you want I'll email the torrent to you, or look for where I downloaded it. Might be a second, as I have it on another laptop. But I'll try to remember to get that to you if you want it.

I got an iATKOS v1.0i DVD and it booted so I guess it will work. It's only for Intel and apparently it is easy to install.

As long as it is easier than those old 10.4 OSX86 installations, I think I can handle it. (I used to have a 10.4 install)

Ok. Well some of you arent quite sure what you are talking about.

Before you tell him to get quad core processors and new power supplies and upgrade his video card, did anyone even look up the chipset specs? Or perhaps, does anyone have little pang of intuition that says "maybe a P4 chipset wont work with a fancy C2D chip"

Well it wont. Here you go read up.

The bus speed of P4's is a 800mhz. Since C2D came out, we have reached 1066, and more recently 1333 (and 1600 on server parts and stuff).

800 started being phased out before the P4 was even discontinued. The 4xxx series C2D chips (ie. obsolete allendale cores with only 2mb of cache) had an 800mhz bus, but Im still not sure about compatibility with your board, as the Intel website never mentions using core chips in it.

You need a new motherboard, pay careful attention to what chipset you get. try and get like the newest or second newest one. I think P35 is cool? Anyways my personal processor recommendation is the 6750, as is the cheapest 1333mhz bus chip I can find around my area at least ($200). But pick up a wollfdale if you can find one .

Also Intel hasnt changed its socket in like 4 years. Amd keeps changing its socket . And you dont need a new power supply, the power on your chip is around 90W, all the 65nm ones are 65W (except mobile etc). Use the charts
