A philosophical phrase... I want (Non-inflamatory) opinions

Post by HBN »

If you immediately know the candle light is fire, then the meal was cooked long ago.
I want to discuss the meaning(s) behind this. It seems very deep to me.

I've done philosophy for 2 years in college and to me, that's just jibberish

(And to me, this seems spammish)

Its very philosophical (IMHO). Its also very much a riddle.

I didn't think a genuine attempt at a discussion about something would be considered spam....

After a few quick Google searches, here's my interpretation:

It's not worth figuring out if it's obvious, because someone already did.

Where did you find that quote?

...You missed the whole point...

What was your Google search? I'm curious what you found.

EDIT:

It was a phrase that caught my eye (Or rather; ear) on an Episode of Stargate SG1. Recently I heard the phrase again, and figured I'd ask what peoples interpretations of it were.

I just pasted the line exactly as you quoted it into Google.

Google search 1

Google search 2

I don't see how this is deep. It just means "don't waste your time analyzing the obvious". :? What exactly was the point, then?

I wanted to get other peoples views of what it meant. Clearly, I'm not the only one with that question.

Simply put; there is no right or wrong answer. Just what you think, and whether people agree or not.

Thats how you start a discussion, correct? (Rhetorical question)

From one of the forums where this same question was asked:
Ah. But you miss the most important fact of the matter.
It is... what you want it to be. To each his own. It's more the lesson you learn from the words then the words themselves.
(The quote was edited for typos. Is can be found here:

Really? I mean, it's a random quote from a sci-fi series, thrown in to make the show seem smarter than it really is.
I've done philosophy for 2 years in college and to me, that's just jibberish
I've also taken philosophy courses, and I agree with DK. This quote is not in the least bit philosophical. It's something a thirteen year old would throw together in an attempt to sound deep and thoughtful.

Well isn't a good chunk of philosophy you personally reading into quotes what you want to? :P After all, your personal interpretation is all that matters at the end of the day.

I read into it what Bic did; cool quote, IMO.

Ahh, I should of known this was a SG1 Reference since I'm a major fan of the series. Let see what I can think what it could mean. Um...

Ok I think this is what it could mean: If you did something many times before, You know what it is. ???

Just looking at it, the only way it's applicable these days is a 'romantic' dinner; hence the candle being burned. If there's a candle burning, then dinner is served (or is on its' way), no?

That's about the only logic I can pull out of it anyhow.

We have to keep in mind. The epsiode of SG1 this came from. Had a Asian/Indian (as in India) flare to it.
