Genesis SCART-to-S-VIDEO Conversion - Why Doesn't This Work?

Includes but not limited to: SNES, Genesis, Sega CD, PlayStation 1, Nintendo 64, Dreamcast, Game Gear and I guess the Virtual Boy.

Genesis SCART-to-S-VIDEO Conversion - Why Doesn't This Work?

Post by kevinski »

I was trying to get S-VIDEO-quality output from my Sega Genesis without actually modifying it, so I purchased a Genesis SCART cable, an SCART coupler and an SCART-to-S-VIDEO converter, expecting it to work. Here's how it looks when they're all together:

I get audio, but I have no video. This really should work, shouldn't it? Is there something that I'm not considering here? The only connector that's missing pins is the Genesis cable, but it's supposed to be missing pins.

God, I'm almost ashamed to say this, but I found the problem...sorta. The s-video cable going from my switch to the television had fallen out. Anyway, everything's now in either black and white or color with very, very little saturation. Any help?

That SCART to/from S-Video is a breakout and will only work correctly if the device outputs S-Video on the correct Pins of SCART. What your seeing is composite video on one of the pins, or a poor-quality composite to S-Video adapter (a single capacitor).

I'm not sure that I understand entirely. The image that I'm seeing is definitely of s-video quality, as it's noticeably sharper than what I've seen on Genesis from composite. I had gotten a color image at first, but it was very highly saturated. Upon reconnecting everything, I was getting an extremely low-saturation picture.

I've been told that Genesis should support s-video output simply by using a converter like this, but is that correct? I'd rather not modify my Genesis in any form, so what would be the best means of getting accurate color representation with an s-video connection with cables/adapters. Can't you simply get an s-video cable for Genesis (even an unofficial one)? Or is it more complicated than that?
