I'm not the least bit interested in starting a flame war over consoles, but I was curious about something. Personally, I'm not the least bit interested in the latest consoles. My most current console is a PS2, and I'm fine with that. Call me cheap, but I've never paid more than $25 for a game, and I wouldn't like to pay more than $200 for a console. Does anyone else here think like that?
To top things off, I'm a mediocre gamer at best. I've only ever beat one game, and that was Bugs Bunny's Crazy Castle for NES. In fact, I think my brothers helped me beat it. I get all the challenge and enjoyment I feel I could want out of the older systems, I was just wondering what some of you preferred.

On one hand, I don't thing $600+/- is that bad to bring the gaming level to its next extreme. High-Def graphics are totally awesome, and suck you into the game on many levels. GTA4, for example, if you shoot somebody in front of your car, they will splatter onto it (Haven't played it...I watch XPlay).
On the other...The Atari Generation of systems made you use your imagination to play. Graphics? WHAT graphics? Your "guy" what a little dot. And rarely were there more than one level. It just got faster and harder until you died.
Both genres have a special place in my heart. I cannot chose between them.
Progress is king. If the games themselves aren't more and more advanced than the last, then the ways we Play the games must be. PS3 and 360 are great, but so are NES and Genesis running on GP2X or PSP. That's my take on things.

I rarely play my xbox, so I guess my ps2 would be the newest system I have and use. I think too much attention is placed on multi-player now and single player going down the tubes.
My favorite series started getting worse as graphics got better. Megaman for example everything was great until x6 and then the whole series went to hell. The graphics got better but game play sucked and so did the story. Anyone play the Street Fighter EX games? They were 3d and were the worst fighters ever. Thats why I'm a bit nervous about Street fighter 4.

i like both, but retro holds a very dear place in my heart. the atari 2600 and snes to be exact. the atari because it was the first system our family owned and it's what i grew up with. the snes because it was the first system i personally bought and just look at all those old school 16 bit rpgs!
i like the new generation, i just can't justify the cost. maybe when the ps3 gets down to $200 (yeah right...) i'll get one. i'm like tibia, a ps2 is the most recent system i have.

I'm with both of you, by the way. Latest = PS2. Which is a good system with a lot of great games. I'm waiting for the libraries to expand a bit before jumping into the PS3/360. The Wii has a good library, though (In my humble opinion). I might be getting one soon-ish.
i've never paid more than 25 dollars for a system. and the newest i have are the xbox and a ps2 (the ps2 isn't really mine and the xbox was a gift).
i don't know. i'm proud that the new systems are making use of awesome graphics and integrating new things like dvd players (hddvd and bluray) and music player, etc. but the prices are getting way out of hand. we have this discussion at work all the time.
but remember when the dreamcast came out? during that time, it was super expensive. comparative to that of buying a ps3 now. or maybe it was because i was young and 20 bucks was like 1 million to me. either way.. (i believe sony is pulling a sega... don't start a flame war, pm me if you wanna discuss.)
but all in all i prefer retro systems for the pro-longed game play. they don't make games like they used to. haha remember when your NES screwed up and you had to restart it ALL OVER AGAIN? lol longer game play because of no saving mechanism. call it weird, but that's why i like retro systems.
Why rely on memory that could have blurred with time when you can just look something up? The Dreamcast cost $199 at release. The PS2 cost $299 at release.
I prefer the newer consoles (as far back as the N64 and PS1) because I rarely ever spend more than an hour playin' a NES or SNES game, last game for SNES I put more than a few hours of play into was Super Metroid, then I got stuck and not even walk-throughs on Gamefaqs could help me.
But the oldest game I have played for more than a few hours in the past month was Dino Crisis on the PS1. (Way better than the Original Resident Evil)
Mario Kart Wii has already eaten up like at least 6 hours. (The motorcycles pwn!!!!)
No way would I not want to own a next-gen console tbh. You can't get the same amazement and wow factor out of games that are old imo. They are great games, I don't mind digging out the PS1 or even Genesis games for a bit of fun, but I want to play games like Crysis, Haze, GTA4, GT5 for the wow factor and the excellent graphics.
When passing by the presentation area at the MGC I heard one of the guys say, "When people our age (40+) look to play video games again we go back to the games we play and then we look at other games. And we become come known as retro games, as all the consoles/games we play are retro."
I para-phrased that, as I was just passing but, that is one man's idea.
Me personally I enjoy modern and vintage. Vintage games give me a nice comfortable area, I know the controller, and I know what to expect. Modern games are always full of surprises, like playing Phantasy Star Online for the first time. If you want something you know and like, go vintage, if you want something new and (possibly) exciting, power up your 360 or PS3.
I think Wii could do a lot better if they grabbed the playability and story of old-school Nintendo with it's new user-interface.... But I think after 20 years of recycling most of the same thing over and over they've lost the originality that made Nintendo great.
And I have to agree to an extent that there are becoming too many buttons on a controller. The 360 which works for those of use that have learned how to use controller and that controller, we know how to use the two joy sticks, D-pad, and about 10 buttons. I think we might need feet controls, another hand or some sort of brain interface to play games in the future.
