LCD for my UMPC project.

Post by armasmike »

i want to get this for my umpc project

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... otohosting

I just got this mini itx

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... Y.m238.lVI

The board doesn't have a LVDS but i can get one from here

http://www.mini-box.com/VIA-LVDS-05G-24 ... ategory=20

Will that LVDS work with the 8.5 LCD i want to order.

Also how do i power the LCD ?

Does the LVDS power the LCD ?

I also want to get a touchscreen kit thats plug-in to the usb.

This is a first run at making a umpc.

The LVDS adapter will not work with that screen, as the screen is STN. I hope you noticed that the screen is monochrome, not color as well.

Um, what are your goals for this project? With ultraportables like the EEE out for quite cheap now($300-550), why spend all the money and put in all the effort something for something quite a bit larger? There is at least one person that has converted the EEE into a tablet, if that is what you want to do.

Prior to the cheap ultraportables being out, I well understood the quest to get a UMPC for a decent price by building your own. However, I spent more on my attempt(s) that failed than even the up coming EEE PC 900.

Well then thank you i didn't see it was a monochrome lcd i won't be getting that.

I am not looking to save money the EEE are nice but i want to make one my self.

I know the umpc i make it going to be bigger then any umpc out there but this one was made by me.

I end goals it to have a 9"w , 9"L and the height i don't know yet i want it to be small but will see how it goes.

I did see your tom61 in 2005-2006 i been reading the fourm for a LONG time. This is my first time posting anything here.

I want to know what happen to your project but i guess it didn't work out.

I was looking for umpc and found this
http://homepage.mac.com/peter_green/MMP_MkIII_Tablet/

Ones i saw this i want to make my own.

So the parts i have are the

mini-itx EPIA-M10000

Hd i have a 2.5 40gb

Power i just order a picoPSU 120w 12v DC-DC
http://www.mini-box.com/s.nl/it.A/id.41 ... ategory=13

The memory is DDR400 well get 1gb

No keyboard or mouse. I want the LCD to be touch screen I will add WiFi and bluetooth using the USB.

The battery i need to get last i think becasue i don't know what i need to power the LCD and the MB. I would like some help on that i guess after i get all the parts and read how much each thing takes in for power.

So that is what i want to make it's not going to be the samlles umpc but hell i made it.

The LCD it the one thing i don't understand. Do i have to get a LVDS to have a 8' LCD ?

If i get a pci video card will i need to wire the LCD in to the pci video card?

Do i need to wire the LCD in to the MB vidoe pin out on the board. So then i can still use a external lcd if i want to.

ANY help on the understanding of the LCD and what to order so it will work with my mini itx MB would be great.

Thank you for all your help.

Just buy a nice 8" Touchscreen with VGA.

This one is 800x480 and is nice and bright with USB touchscreen.

Well my uPC/PCp project fizzled out once the 3.5" board quit booting completely. Not long after that board gave up the ghost, I heard about the Fujitsu Lifebook P1120 on a post on Hack-a-Day (in a post about Toshiba Libretto mods, which I had at that time). After a bit of eBaying I ended up with one for $350 or so. Check the few 'new toy' threads I've made for the Lifebook and Libretto details.

For the battery, you need a 12V battery to power the Pico-ITX, and you can power a screen off that by using a regulator, if the screen takes 12V or less. If you can afford it, grab a 12V Li-Ion or Li-Poly battery pack designed to work as a second battery for a portable device (usually DVD player), that way it'll have the charging circuitry to keep it from exploding, as well as being light and small.

If you intend to use a PCI video, it's best to get a screen that has a controller to take VGA, like hailrazer linked to. Messing with controllerless LCDs is a pain. You have to custom wire a great many wires to hard to find at best connectors, and do it well enough to not pick up interference.

Great thank that it a good price i thought it would be in the $400.

and it goes to 1,024 x 768 that is what i am looking for.

Can i wire this to the pin out on the MB and so i can still use the vga on the MB for a exteranl LCD ?

So then i don't need a LVDS for my MB ?

No you wire this to the external vga. Just use a vga splitter to run both Lcd's.

vga splitter didn't think about that.

I looked around and i will get this http://www.monoprice.com/products/produ ... 1&format=2

I will put one inside the case for the lcd the other on the back of the case.
