Idea: PSPLite Inside a Super Advantage?
When it comes to this sort of thing I'm an extreme noob. Barely any skill at all. Apologies in advance if I over-explain some things. I’m assuming this is the right forum for this.
I saw that NES-on-a-Chip-inside-an-NES-Cart mod today and for some reason it got me thinking about other mods, in particular the idea of sticking a PSPLite (the one with TV-Out) inside the Super Advantage.
The UMD drive would be on the back (the side with the cord) along with the memory stick port, the audio/video out and the power input.
The audio/video could be left unmodified as separate connections or made into RCA outs or maybe one of those three-in-one connections (you know, 1/8" with the three bands for left/right/video and normal RCA connectors on the other end. Something that would connect to this cable.).
The battery I imagine could be placed flush on the bottom so it’s unnoticeable.
The power button could be pretty much any of the switches or the button for slow motion.
An option would be adding some LEDs to the face for various activity lights (UMD/MS/WiFi/Power).
Perhaps a fancy external antenna if the wifi card wanted to be maintained.
And, of course, the buttons of the Super advantage mapped to the PSP's buttons.
Only thing that would be missing is the nub. Have to leave it missing, put in a switch to swap the joystick between digital/analog or add small secondary stick.
I mean sure it wouldn’t really be portable so much. Unless there was some way to mount one of those PSOne Screens or something...
Does any of this sound doable to you all? Right now I can barely mod anything. I think it would take me years to finish something like this. Anybody have an opinion?

Yeah, it's doable, but since you can barely mod anything as you say, i would start by becoming familiar with a mod/hack that has been done already, something that you can study the tutorials for and be certain you have all the knowledge you might need. I would make sure you are familiar with both the construction/disassembly of the PSP-2000 model (Slim & Lite) and of the Super Advantage (The easier of the two!). Also, unlike the PSP-1000 model (the fat) the 2000 has laminated FPCs (flexible printed circuits) for the button substrate... This means you would have to be able to solder to the small leads off the ribbon clamps (very much doable, but many times very frustrating).
I was hoping a board specializing in portablizing thirty year old consoles and sticking a Nintendo-on-a-chip into an actual NES cart wouldn't ask things like "why".
I guess it'd be neat to just hook something like that up and play it. Get kind of a "wow" out of people who see it and realize what it is and does. It'd basically be an entire console in a joystick. Not a few relatively old games and that's it, but a real game interchangeable, music/video playing console. Is that any more or less beneficial that the NES-on-a-chip-in-an-NES-cart?
On a separate note I had thought I had done enough research for this idea but a little more research revealed that the TV out function, for UMD games anyway, only works with component connections anyway. That wouldn't be convenient, even if I had a fancy TV with component inputs (which I don't). Unless somebody has already made a normal composite output mod for original PSP and/or PSPLite. The kind with a little connector as opposed to a giant circuit board-with-replacement-face-plate.
Perhaps at this point I'll do something else. Like put one of those mini-itx boards in a super advantage. Or something. Creativity isn't my strong point

we don't actually specialize in putting NOACs in nes carts. That's a casemod, and we're more about portabilisation.
Now creating something for the wow-effect is just stupid, but I wish you good luck, and hope you don't just have it lying in the corner once you're done building it. Which you probably will, since it's a PSP

I dont see the point of this mod. The only game that would even work well with it is Street Fighter Alpha 3 MAX, some games would suffer nastily, and others like Medal of Honor Heroes and Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops would be unplayable.
Just leave your PSPLite as it is, since it's already the best handheld out.

Then in some small way we are all stupid. I mean, seriously. Your trying to say that the ONLY thing on your mind is to make it smaller, add a screen, built in controls and a battery? If none of this was cool to do in the first place, nobody would freaking do it.
If I'm wrong, then I'd be shocked to learn this. Take the HBN64 for example. Yeah, it'll be great to have all my favorite games on that go. But what I'm really waiting for is for somebody to see me with it. See me open it. And when I start using it, have them be completely awe-shocked.
Sure. The N64 is twice-obsolete. But its still gonna turn heads.
Please keep an eye on my HBN64 progress.

so so true
Not posting doesn't make you a noob, ignorance, stupidity, laziness, and talking trash make you a noob. Just cause I don't post in threads doesn't mean I don't read the threads...
The same could be said about your GP2x mod, what's the benefit of placing it in a larger case? Now, I don't care why you did it, the only thing that matters is that you did it. Practicality, and benefits aren't always the best reasons to do something, sometimes the matter of doing it is the most important. If you want benefits then look at it like this doing this will improve his skills, allowing him to tackle larger, more grandiose tasks, that in my eyes is more than enough benefit!bacteria wrote:Rather than a "PSPLite inside a Super Advantage" how about a "PSPLite inside a bin", you know the one outside your house![]()
To answer the question, yes it would more than fit as clearly the case is far bigger than the PSP. However, what's the point and benefit of the end result??
I don't see how any game would be unplayable at all, controls are controls, as long as you have all of them you can play any game. Now if there were only two buttons, then that would make the game unplayable (without adding buttons in). Above that unless you have done it and can say with quantifiable evidence that this would make some games unplayable, then what you have said is merely a assumption.Negative_Creep wrote:I dont see the point of this mod. Christ people! You don't have to like the idea to help him, you don't even have to do it, just hear the guy out and don't be so damned quick to criticize the idea (not all criticism is constructive).

He said he was removing the analog stick. MGS and MOH cannot be played without the analog stick. So get off my back and stop flaming me when I gave a decent reason why this isn't a great idea.I don't see how any game would be unplayable at all, controls are controls, as long as you have all of them you can play any game. Still, if your making it to play games like Street Fighter and Tekken. It's a good idea.
First if you do read his thread he says he would install a switch to be able to switch from analog and digital signal from the joystick. Second what i was doing was pointing out the fact that your negativity wasn't needed, so therefore not flaming.

I'm not sure that's even possible on a PSP. correct me if i'm wrong though. I know you can wire an analog stick to the face buttons a lot of people on AcidMods do that.JMarshall wrote:First if you do read his thread he says he would install a switch to be able to switch from analog and digital signal from the joystick.
Thanks for the defense guys. I was kind of spit-balling/brainstorming, trying to think it out, not knowing a lot about the innards of a PSP or Super Advantage. Just seemed like a neat idea for some reason.
I think PSP-in-a-Super-Advantage is bit too ambitious for me right now. I hope some one else takes it on sometime as I'd love to see it. I hear Ben is always looking for a new project
(right?).
I'll have to do a lot of soldering and take on incrementally harder and harder projects before I could even attempt this. I'm trying to think of something relatively easy right now. USB (or parallel port) SNES controller maybe?
Installing some plain composite connectors into an SNES looks almost doable. Perhaps I'll start there. Or perhaps some how re-wiring the super advantage to use a normal sized SNES gamepad's circuit board. Just an idea. If I can do that it will save room on the inside for whatever else I want to do with it. Actually if anybody has any ideas on a real easy project, with "beginner" level of soldering, I'm all ears.

It's possible if he starts with a potentiometer based joystic, then wires a PIC (Programable Integrated Circuit) in. The PIC would have to be programed to output both the digital signal of the d-pad, and allow the analog signal of the "nub" to pass through. It is possible, just not the easiest thing to do.Negative_Creep wrote:I'm not sure that's even possible on a PSP. correct me if i'm wrong though.
