Finally time for strict avatar/sig dimensions?

Post by WhatULive4 »

With the addition of the new advertising on the left side of the screen, I am finding more and more often that I have to scroll to the right in order to read complete posts. My monitor resolution is 1152x864 and I'm sure it would be much worse for people with 1024x768.

My question is, can the advertising either be pushed to the right side, or is it finally time for strict enforcement of the sig/avatar size?

I realize that for a lot of people this won't be a problem, but for the little guy with the old 15" crt it is kinda a pain.

Tell me where I can buy a 25" monitor for $10, and I'll buy two.

I agree with more strict sizing regulations (although my avatar is pretty big), as I am using 1024x768 on both my desktop and my Lifebook, and I have to scroll to the right to read posts a lot of the time with the new ads.

I agree. I thought there was like a 150 wide x 250 tall max size posted somewhere in the rules. Why isn't it enforced?

As for monitors, why should I have to go buy one just because someone inconsiderate has a huge avatar?

ditto

I think the problem is that the posted max for avatars is 80x80 which ridiculously small. I think mine is 96x96 and probably one of the smallest ones on the forum. I say, set a reasonable maximum and people will actually abide by it.

If they don't, then remove their sig/av

CRTs suck. There's a reason they only cost $10. Besides, with CRTs, monitor size doesn't have much to do with resolution.

Since phpbb doesn't have a strict avatar function, we have to use the honor system.

Let's say no avatars larger than 150 by 200. Judging from what I've seen on other forums, that's pretty generous.

I'm good with 150x200 for avatars. Now what about signatures? Also, are the mods going to do anything about it if these regulations aren't followed?

450 or 500 wide seems good. The ad sidebar is 120, so if avatars are 150 and sigs are 450-500, then thats a total of 720-770 worth of images. Add the different border sort of things, and even EEE users will have minimal side scrolling (unless pictures wider than the sig limit are posted).

My avatar is small (80x80), but *ahem* my sig is bigger, it needs to be to cover some of my projects. My 17" TFT's resolution is 1280x1024 and the sig looks fine on that.

I will be changing my sig when I build my website in due course, in the meantime however I intend to keep my existing one going.

I don't see why you can't just scale it down a bit. Say even 90% its current size. Your sig alone causes the scroll bar at the bottom fyi. Maybe even make it two rows of pics instead of 1?

I think that's generous, too. Heck, most messengers only allow 100 square. As for enforcing it, can a mod delete an avatar from a member's profile? Assuming, of course, that warnings have been issued and ignored.

We've never really had any problem with sigs, especially when you look at other boards. I've seen some sigs that are longer than the average discussion here (outside F42). Huge billboard-size sigs, embedded Flash, all kinds of crazy garbage.

As far as sigs are concerned, just keep up the status quo.

i usually say anything under 120 pixels wide is ok for an avatar 150 is kinda big. as to sigs i dont care, i wish they would up the allowed text amount in sigs though, over 50% of mine is formatting stuff (size color etc) so im limited to what i can put

Hows my avatar?

And boy does it feel nice to be on a 20inch 1600x1050 lcd and have another one coming in the mail for dual screens.
