New forum section request?

Post by bacteria »

Any chance of an extra forum section - to allow for other systems not listed; eg:

Amstrad GX4000 (I will be modding one of these, I got one off e-bay)
Intellivision
Plug 'n' play (Radica is covered in Sega section, but there are many other systems about; better)
Atari Jaguar

etc. (whatever else I missed)

How about a section for "Other console systems" to cover the gap - doesn't seem appropriate to use Forum 42 for these other systems?

seems like those forums would be useless as almost no one even thinks about modding those systems

I dont think we need any more, actually I think some one or two could be gotten rid of.

guess its bens, spark, or gannon's call though

good luck on the mods though

Maybe remove some of the more "less used" board and replace it with a "other systems" one?

I don't think anyone would even want to talk about Jaguar except for me and Triton haha.

May be useful for other mods like my Router Mod.

If there were more talk about old/retro computers there might be a chance for a "Vintage Computer" forum. So until then Amstrad forum is out.

Plug 'n Play.... Really you have only three choices on those, NOAC, GOAC and the Atari FB2. All three fit into already existing forums.

Atari Jaguar... really it's been mentioned, it's not discussed enough to need it's own forum.

Intellivion, how fast do you think Ben would lay the smack down on us for making such an abomination?

I kind of disagree about the plug-and-play thing. There really are so many out there. I've got a Power Joy, which is an NES emulator, but I've also got two different Maxx Play packs, and those seem considerably different to me. They're more emulators of arcade games than consoles. I also have a Mortal Kombat plug-and-play, and there's hundreds more out there. I think those might deserve a separate forum.

That said, personally, I don't really understand why there's separate forums for the various incarnations of Nintendo, Playstation, etc. Wouldn't it be less confusing to have a thread for each manufacturer? With that argument, I suppose the Atari Jaguar could also go under the Atari category.

Just my thoughts on the matter.

The reason there are separate forums for the main companies is because they are the main companies. If this was the 70s or 80s, assuming we could have internet at the time, Sony would be swapped out for Sony, and Microsoft for Commodore. But in the current day, these consoles that didn't survive the ages as well as the 2600 or NES, they don't get much scrutiny nor discussion, and thus don't deserve their own forums.
Plug-n-plays that aren't console clones are just cheap gimmicks, its pointless to give them their own forum, as you'd just become a tool to some Chinese conglomerate that just changes some sprites and sound effects.

atari jaguar you can put in the 2600 forum, the others? Not worth it. You can always post in 42

I could understand a vintage computer forum for old computer discussion, but other than that there's really no need for another forum.

The router hack and other miscellaneous hacks like it could go in Tech Q&A if you need answers, but since it was finished when you posted it could have gone in News. Nobody really cares about the Jaguar, CD-i, or those other consoles that popped up in the mid-90s and died within 2 years of release. Ben hates the Intellivision and would probably have us executed if we made a forum for discussing it. (Really, you can put early 80s and all 70s consoles in the Atari 2600 forum. It's close enough.)

Don't even get me started on the "plug-and-play" things. They're so freaking simple and limited that there's no reason to have a forum for discussing them. They only hold a few games and use some architecture that usually isn't anything like the console they're imitating, so there's no way to add a cartridge slot to them. Really, all they come down to is attaching a screen to the composite-out point on the motherboard and making a case.

Maybe we can do a vintage computer forum, but I don't think a "miscellaneous hacks" or "[insert random POS console here] Hacking" forum is necessary. We have enough forums going on as it is.

As for combining forums, that would be a royal pain in the rear end, because phpbb 2 doesn't have a function for that. All the threads would have to be moved manually.

So, what about a forum for "Misc consoles"?

If that weren't a joke I would have had to hurt you. The answer is NO!

My namco portable progress thread is over the the arcade board. I would think that the arcade board would be a good place for Plug "n" Plays to go.

Who knows if the Namco Portable will ever become a reality? :P
