You're new, but the News forum is only for announcing projects YOU completed. Moving...

And the best way to get Ben's attention is to email him, not post in the forums or WordPress comments.

Oh!
Sorry and
Sorry :(

I thought this was a forum just for him? Silly me..

I meant it as a joke, not as a demand, you know? Hence the smiley :)

I am very interested in the project tough i have two GS'es to try it on...

He was technically correct in posting it there. The forum description states:
Here's the forum for chatting about the latest news at benheck.com. Want to show off your new portable? Or perhaps gossip about Ben's latest antics and gizmos? This is the place! Also includes annoucements and events info.
That said , I don't think i've ever seen anyone post something like that in the news forum , so I guess this is the best place.

Yeah, he could have used this topic. But that's an easy one to miss..
But won't there be a "how to" on engadget or something, like he does with a lot of stuff he makes?

Again, Sorry guys...

where's this place where he posts "how to's"?

I'm serious, I think that project is just gorgeous and i REALLY REALLY want to make one myself, even if it takes me years!!

Now, having never done this I would need some guidance...

There isn't really such thing as a how to to make a laptop. Sure he describes what he did on a few of his projects, but there is so much more that he probably spent hours troubleshooting and changing. There is no definitive guide for these kind of things. You just have to try it, and if you have the skills, you could be the next benheck.

well if you want to know how he made the laptop, you can piece together a half-way decent guide from all the "Making of" articles Ben's made.

I know on the first Atari 800 laptop he described how he made the keyboard. Something that is going to eat up a lot of time and patients. As you can see when Ben makes them he wires up every key individually.

A lot of other things Ben has done on the laptops are centered around basic hardware hacking principles. Like when he connects the Compact Flash adapters, the ports, and screens.

Portablizing is usually like programming, playing music, or doing math... what you really need to know is the concepts of how things work, not following a guide. The reason there aren't guides for a perfect system for everything out there is because they take a lot of time to do, as well as a lot of work. Just remember, your search function is your friend. If you think you came up with a brand-new ingenious idea, it's probably been thought of before. Also, it hasn't been updated in a long time, but the information on it is still good... http://www.portablesofdoom.org has a lot of good stuff to start you off.

I agree with everything you just said. These forums would get very boring if everybody just followed the step by step guides in Ben's book. It is all about learning from everyone else's projects and improving on our own.

If you really want one of these laptops, give it a try yourself. If money isn't an object, then what harm could it do? So you learned something you didn't know before. That's good enough for me!

AH! A monster!

Isn't Ben going to post a step by step how-to on Engadget? Or was that just for the PS3 laptop? I'm so confused.

No it's just for the PS3 laptop. The Apple IIGS laptop was a simple commission, while it was Engadget who wanted a how-to and the machine made.
