A Ninja'd Screw-Out - 56k WARNING - MANY pics

Post by HBN »

Okay. Time to make myself useful to the forum.

If you've done an N64p, you know how difficult the E-Torx located in the Jumper or Expansion Pak are to get out. The hole is to small for a GameBit, and ever further to small for a pair of hemostats to grab the edges. There is always the way of taking a diamond wheel to cut a slot into the screw head. But that damages the case.

For those of you who want a good way to get those screws out, without damaging the case, follow these instructions:

Tools:
1 Jumbo Smooth Finish Paper Clip (The one I used was "DPS" brand)
1 Pair of Long-Nose Pliers

How-To:

First, get your paper clip:

Second, using just your hands, bend it out:

Third, using your pliers, cut the end off at about here:

It should look like this:

Forth, grasp the center of the wire firmly in the thinnest section of your pliers and bend them:

It should look like this:

Fifth, insert both ends of the "bit" into adjacent pits of the screw head, grasp the "bit" as close as you can to the case of the Pak (To support the two ends), and twist. Once the screws are broken loose, they should be able to be twisted out without supporting the "bit" with the pliers:

And thats how you "Ninja" a Jumper Pak, or in this case, an Expansion Pak.

Good luck!

Very Nice!

have you tried using this method on the screws holding the N64 together?

Nice lateral thinking, HBN. There are many suggestions of how to remove those screws (including from me); there is no excuse for people not being able to remove them now!

Good idea. This will probably help a lot of people with those annoying screws. I have done all sorts of things to get them out, but this sounds a lot easier than any of them.

Yes. And it was an "EPIC FAIL". The pins are too long at that point to be supported by the pliers. Thus, they bend, rather than grip.

Cheapest way is with these screwdrivers you buy in cheap and cheerful shops - the ones with the small cross head screwdrivers and flat head ones. Cost about £1.50 for a set, and they include three hex head screwdrivers, one is handy for the small Nintendo screwdrivers and the larger one fits the N64 case ones! You might need to Dremel the edges down, but that is quick work.

This is a very cheap way to do it, and also you need the other screwdrivers in the set for other project work!
