If your resistors are resistign anything other than voltage it prolly woldn't work on a electronic, so i'd say they are resisting voltage.. hmmm
To figure out how many ohms you need to use, use the formula i provided.

When you get them from Radio Shak, the packages have a chart on the back that explains the color band code. That will tell you your resistance in ohms, as well as the degree of variance. You could also google some kind of chart, as well.

an ohm is just a unit of resistance. The best way to explain it is actually with the formula: V=IR conveniently known as "Ohm's Law." This formula states that Voltage is equal to the Current times Resistance. Current is basically the amount of little electrons moving through the wire and Voltage is the electrical "pressure." I didn't get it until my Circuits book used a water flow analogy. Voltage is like pressure, i.e. a super soaker or fire hose would be high voltage and a dripping faucet would be low voltage. Current is like the water current flowing through the pipe. Finally, Resistance is actually more relatable to the diameter of the pipe. If you turn on a garden hose and don't alter the flow rate (don't mess with the valve once you turn it on) and then put your finger partially over the end you create a makeshift nozzle effect and the water goes farther. Reducing the output area of the hose is the same as increasing the resistance in an electrical circuit.
I hope I said this right, my circuits class covered very little in true concept, instead he just had us work a bunch of dick problems that are used in the real world .00001% of the time.

Portablizing is one thing, basic electronics knowledge is another. For example, if someone is needing help thinking through how best to set up batteries for their portable, okay, that's what this place is for. So...WHAT is a resistor? And HOW do I use it? Can *I* use one differently than you did? Does it resist forces like gravity? If it can resist gravity, wouldn't it be, like, anti-gravity? Anti-gravity devices are used in everyday electronics and nobody knows about it yet? Government conspiracy??? They're out to get us all! One day they're gonna turn all the resistors on at once, and we'll all float away, leaving the rich people to have Earth and the poor people with resistors to travel the Universe and a renegade band of Galactic Nomads.
