VMware USB use...

Ok I'm trying to get his Garmin GPS 18 to work on my laptop. As the software is for Windows, I'm going to try and use Vmware. I know that USB can be used to a limited extent, but as the GPS receiver uses USB, do you guys think it will be passed on to the OS rather then just be seen only by Ubuntu.

I've thought about using Wine.... but it didn't work right off the bat and I don't want to mess around that much to get this working. Yes you can call me lazy or impatient.

Last time I used VMWare (Which was a year ago and with Windows as the host OS) it asked me what I wanted to do with the a device when I plugged it in. (Forward it to the guest os or let the host handle it)
My verdict is that Wine wonät work while VMWare will. Wine doesn't have a driver subsystem, whereas VMWare can (hopefully) forward the USB communication.

I dont know about VMware, but USB does work like you would need it to under VirtualBox. Control of the USB device, once selected, is passed entirely to the virtual system. The downside to VirtualBox is that it takes a few extra steps to set up USB support, but there is a great guide here: http://www.ubuntu1501.com/2007/12/insta ... pport.html

I cant compare it to VMWare since I havn't tried that yet, but give this a try if VMW doesn't do what you need.

You guys are going to love this. I got a VMware Windows Home client working, I got the software installed, and I made sure that the USB was enabled. When I went to get it all working, I plugged the USB GPS device in and..... nothing. I even asked it to auto-detect, and check the COM port (which is nonexistent). NOTHING!

I can't figure out how to get the VMware Windows to see the USB device, but at this point it's moot. I already picked up gannon and am at the town for the MGC.
