I have 5 months until school. I need something to occupy my time. I'm turning into a WoW addict minus the WoW.
I was thinking of a large project. Something that would involve a lot of time and effort. I was thinking of restoring a house. But, well, I can't exactly afford a house right now.
Any idea how I could get enough money to get a house for a few months? (Family can not afford).
Or, any other ideas to occupy 5 months of my life. Anything at all. Traveling the world is okay with me, if I had the money to do it.
No. No more portables for me. I find building them frustrating and stressful. And I'm low on the cash flow.
Anyways, quite obviously, my dad was very against the whole restoring a house concept. And as much as I hate it, I'm still reliant on my parents for just aboot everything. So that's a no-go, no matter how awesome it would be, or how much money I could make. Maybe next year, when I can drive!

Mailshot your neighbourhood and offer yourself to do their gardening chores; most of this sort of work is non-skillful, but graft. Or window cleaning, or glass washer and general maintenance in a pub / hotel.
Build a custom bicycle. I just put mine back together. Its got a combonation of 3 different bikes, with an ~5 foot fork, extended rear, and longer backbone. My dad and I created it a few years ago, and I just finished putting it back together.
How about fixing an old car instead? They're cheaper than houses, and I don't think you have to pay tons of taxes on them if they're not registered. Just get a service manual for it.
Really, cars weren't very complicated before they started cramming sensors and microchips everywhere. Seriously, if you look under the hood of any older vehicle (pre-'85 is a safe bet), there's very little in there. In most cases, just the battery, engine, and radiator.
Make sure you pick something you can easily get parts for, like a Chevy pickup or just about any car. We have a '74 D200 (renamed the Ram in 1980), and there are relatively few parts out there for it compared to an F150 or a Charger. Luckily the engine and drivetrain are regular parts, but getting the body back into shape will be trickier. (Especially since it needs few mechanical parts.) If you manage the project well, you can stay in your budget pretty easily.
You could probably find a decent starter project for under $500, as long as you're not afraid of rust and welding. I bet you could get a common classic back into decent shape for a couple grand, tops. ("Show" condition is much harder and more expensive to get to.)
Much cheaper than an old house, and much more fun. You might have better chances at this if you let your dad help choose what to work on. (You know, use the whole "opportunity to get the fun car you always wanted when you were my age" allure to your advantage.)
Yeah, it's not a tech thing, but I think it's rewarding to have something tangible for your efforts, rather than a bunch of code.
I would LIKE to do something like that, but, well, I budgeted everything out, and I simply can't afford gas on a classic car. I do plan on restoring one one day though. I just can't do it now. I get $60ish/week from my job and nobody else will hire me. I have about $1500 saved. (And I'd like to get my full license first, so I can drive it on my own. Me + Van + Parking = Fail)
All the rest aren't crazy enough. Something completely against my nature would be cool to do. I'd like to travel but have no transportation, and everything else is too expensive.
(Pretty soon shaving is going to turn into something crazy enough... )
Basically all that's limiting me from doing everything I want to do is money. Damn money. (Wanna give me money? If everyone here gives me $100...)
Build a workshop in your backyard. That's one thing I've always wanted to do, and would do, except for the fact that I'll be moving out for good by the end of summer (getting married in January, too!)

Get a job! Not too crazy, but practical. Even if you can't find a job you particularly enjoy, it gives you something to do. Besides, having a bit of cash to throw around come college time definitely couldn't be a bad thing.
And you're in Canada, right? Go to Toronto. Fun place, but it smells of sewage and prostitutes. Then again, what part of Canada doesn't?
Toronto's quite a ways off for me, I'd need to take the bus to the GO station the take the train to Toronto. Which means money. And I can't find work, so I don't have any of that.

Make a home based pie bakery. People will gladly pay $30 for a fresh pie that cost you only $4 plus labour. It is really a fun hobby, and it is great to have pie making skillz during college. And though one person thought i was a girl earlier, i am not. Pie making
can be for guys too!
