Well some sites give you a link to a movie or game or whatever when you buy it. You just have to make sure no one knows what the link is, or change the link or whatever.

I've got a video question. I am looking into getting a digital camcorder soon. I want to be able to save the video uncompressed onto a hard drive. Obviously, hard drive camcorders are new and expensive. So, say I have a really fast computer with really big and fast hard drives, and firewire (or USB 2.0) ports. Would I be able to connect the camera to the computer and record directly to the hard drive, bypassing the tape and compression?

Im pretty sure no. Besides do you have a blazing fast laptop with killer hard drives and all that other stuff?

Who said anything about a laptop? I will probably get really long extension cords, or better yet, build a custom PCp. :) But I really want to bypass the tape and compression if its possible. It's kind of dumb for the camera to compress it when you still have to transfer it to the computer and edit it, then re-compress it. Anybody know for sure?

RE: direct recording compression.

A DV camera uses compression internallly on the tapes. When it records it's compressed. However it's a pretty good compression scheme, even I, the Noticer of All Artifacts, can only think of 1 place in Port Washington where artifacts are visible. (white text on dark blue t-shirt)

However the compression can be a problem if you're doing chroma-keying (such as blue screen) The edges of the subject mix with the background a little and therefore are harder to make look good upon compositing. (Robert Rodriguez had this problem in Spy Kids 2 for example) But for pretty much everything else it shouldn't be a problem.

A modern DV camera simply sends its data to the computer via Firewire or USB 2. Typically DV video is NOT recompressed and will become AVI files in the format of Microsoft DV or something along those lines. A capture card either has a DV codec in its hardware (like mine) or a software program runs the codec (most common). Windows 2000 and up can run DV files right out of the box.

As for recording uncompressed, I don't know of (anything remotely cheap) that can do it, especially digital. Plus your datarate would be AT LEAST 20 megs a second, which pushes the limits of most drives, especially if you want a sustained data rate.

So if you're not George Lucas or the God JC (James Cameron, my hero), no.

Yeah, I will be doing plenty of chroma-keying. Hopefully After Effects will be able to clean up any of that mixing. (It better! It cost me 400 bucks! :twisted: :P )

Well then, if even you can't see the artifacts in DV compression, then I have nothing to worry about! :)
